I'll try to keep my perspective, remembering that even the worst day is only one small moment in my life.

When we're in the midst of a dreadful time, it often helps to remember that one day we'll be able to tell a great story about it, one we'll laugh at. We'll laugh because, in retrospect, what we thought was a crisis really wasn't so serious after all. Or we'll laugh because we made it through the crisis and came out stronger on the other side.

Even when I.m short tempered, I will respect others' self esteem. I can argue without trying to destroy the self-image of those I argue with.

Isn't the truth always best? When were talking about ourselves, it is. But we don't need to hurt others in our desire to be truthful. Maybe we're annoyed that our neighbor poses as an itellectual when he clearly isn't. Maybe we giggle when we see a woman who wants to be considered attractive but is dressed inappropriately. Maybe we know that an achievement a child is proud of means little. But we do no good by telling the truth in these circumstances. And we may do great harm.

Instead of being hard on myslef because of the unhealthy things I do, I will focus on the reasons I feel I need my bad habits.

We all have bad habits, Smoking, drinking, gambling, more mundanely, watching too much television, gossiping about others, eating too many sweets. Why do we do these things? Because we're bored, stressed out, unhappy, sad, frustrated, lonely. We do them to feel better, but, too often, they only make us feel worse. We'll never be able to stop these bad habits until we understand the reasons behind them and address those reasons directly.
