“Two years ago to the day on the ‘old’ blogger based Beat Surrender I wrote a few words of praise for Van Meter’s debut album Should’ve Been a Weather Girl ,now they’re back with the follow up Mess of Memory, whilst the appeal of the last album was the alt-country styling’s this album forsakes much of the twang for a straighter rock ’n ’roll path no bad thing as the album is a fine listen and should win them some new fans.”
“The first thing you notice is the amazing voice: Jennifer Van Meter can really sing. The opening cut, "Pearls And Plaid" sets the tone for all the tracks: her sultry and personable vocals backed by loud guitars and the tight, pounding bass/drum combination keeping it all together. And by the end of the second melody, "Lady Trucker" I am completely won over and love to hear her pour her heart out to my ears. This might be the hit although "Love To Help You Out", an up-tempo real radio-friendly rocker is a close second in my book. Great power-pop cooly showcased by songs like "Nickel" with its menacing guitars and sexy vocals. Even the title cut, "Mess With My Memory", a more introspective and uptempo ballad is well-suited for Van Meter's personal delivery. Good music for hungry ears. ”
"Songs about broken hearts are as old as music itself. Somehow though, Van Meter manages to keep it all fresh. The emotions in the songs never feel contrived, and the rock tinged country sound of Van Meter's music holds just a bit of a southern twang that keeps pulling me in."
