Red and Blue will be released tomorrow - Feb. 21!
MAD BUFFALO SHOWS ITS PRIMARY COLORS ON NEW CD, RED AND BLUE, COMING FEBRUARY 21 ALBUM PAINTS VIVID PORTRAITS OF LIFE IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICA
BIGFORK, MT – Out of the “Big Sky Country” comes the new release from Mad Buffalo, Red and Blue, which will be released February 21 and distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution. Red and Blue follows the band’s critically-acclaimed 2008 CD, Wilderness, which No Depression called “beautifully fleshed out, with stellar performances;” while Gritz said of the album: “This is a CD that begs to be heard over and over again ... In a five star rating system, this one gets six stars. Six stars beside a full harvest moon hanging over a bison filled prairie. Good stuff.” And Honest Tune summed up its review by stating, “Wilderness is an outright jewel that gets better with every listen ... one of the best roots-oriented releases of 2008.”
Backing singer/ songwriter/guitarist Randy Riviere on the new album is a stellar cast of Nashville musicians, including legendary guitarist Reggie Young, as well as Jack Holder (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Kevin McKendree (keyboards and vocals), James Pennebaker (guitar, violin, mandolin, banjo), Shane Dwight (vocals), Dave Roe and Craig Young (bass) and Chad Cromwell (drums). The album was produced by Chad Cromwell and Randy Riviere and recorded at Cromwell’s Lamplight Studio in Primm Springs, Tennessee.

Red and Blue
It is hard to believe, but it has been three years since Mad Buffalo has released a cd ... the last being the well-received "Wilderness" album back in 2008.
Our latest record - "Red and Blue" - has been mastered and is ready to go for a release right after the holiday's. Recorded in Nashville with Chad Cromwell co-producing with myself, we're really excited about the project ... an album Chad characterizes as having a "loose, cantankerous vibe".
Once again Mad Buffalo is blessed to have the participation of many great musicians, including Chad Cromwell (Neil Young) on drums, hall of famer Reggie Young (Elvis, Beatles, etc.) on guitar, Jack Holder (Black Oak Arkansas) also on guitar, Dave Roe (Johnny Cash) on bass, James Pennebaker (Lee Roy Parnell) on just about every instrument known to mankind, Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton) on keyboards and others.
What is "Red and Blue" about? Well, I think that Americans have much more in common than we are led to believe. There are forces more 'powerful' than us (big money) working to guide us into this camp or that camp, mainly to get our votes. So, "Red and Blue" is about us; everyday folks doing what we do everyday to provide for our families, make a difference, all of that. The great 'silent majority', if you will. It's not about our politics.
I hope you all like it.
All the best, and Happy Holidays,
Randy Riviere Mad Buffalo

RIP Fess Parker
Well, now Daniel Boone is gone ... or Davy Crockett if you have a few years on me. Fess Parker, who played D. Boone in a great TV series back when I was a kid - after effectively getting entire troops of kids to don coon-skin caps in the 50's through his portrayal as Davy Crockett - passed away this week, and it has struck me a bit. It's pretty amazing how things that we're so important 'back in the day' just get lost and forgotten about, and it takes a jolt like this - the loss of a childhood hero - to force me to remember and think about what it was that made this fellow and his work so special to me.
After we lost George Harrison, I wrote this song "Pieces of Time", that I haven't found a home for yet on an album. And this is really it for me: although there haven't been many events/roles/hero's that struck me as hard as the Beatles did, Fess Parker does represent a particular piece of my formative years (I hope this is still happening, actually) like a single branch in the bundle of sticks I picked up along the way and carry around in my back pocket today. The Fess Parker/a.k.a. Daniel Boone stick to me represents, I think, that yearning for adventure - mostly outside - off into the great unknown - out into the "Wilderness".
Music was very important to me early on, but I did go on to become a wildlife biologist due to some of the interests, the excitement, the lure of wilderness that I must have at least partially picked up from Parker's role as Daniel Boone. I felt similarly, and I think a more strongly, when we lost John Denver several years ago. It just hit me. And forced me to think back upon John's influence on me, which I had largely forgotten about at the time ... "Rocky Mountain High" ... the music, the mountains, the hiking boots, the smiles, etc. Man, that looked like a lot of fun! So now I'm a music writing/playing wildlife biologist who lives in the Rockies. I had the pleasure to tell James Burton this story when he was doing some of his extraordinary guitar work for us on "Wilderness". James of course played with John Denver for about 20 years (and many others including Elvis Presley in his fantastic hall of fame career), and really appreciated my feelings about John, I think, and said Denver was one of the nicest folks he ever worked with ... and that's a long and impressive list.
So, here's to you Fess Parker/Daniel Boone/Davy Crockett. Thank you for being an important part of my medicine bag. I remember. RIP.
