It was a spectacular display of beauty as the sixteen finalists went ‘In Search of Gold’ in the Miss Jamaica World 2008 pageant.The opening featured the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble, Chinese Lion Dancing and body builders from the Spartan Health Club. The delight of the crowd came with the lighting of the torch an act that left the audience very pleased. With the torch ablaze it was time to meet the delegation from Jamaica.The finalists entered the stage to Shaggy’s ‘Feel the Rush’ adorned in black, green and gold track suites by Puma. The girls danced around the stage and it was clear that the judges would have their work cut off for them in trying to find the winner of the contest.
It was then on to the Miss Jamaica World Beach Beauty competition. For this fast track event, the ladies paraded in gold bikinis by ‘The Mushroom’. These bikinis were augmented by bright red and yellow Chinese fans, also in keeping with the show’s Olympic theme. The girls moved to choreography by Weston Haughton.Miss Geddes Refrigeration, Raecine Williams opened the talent competition with a song and dramatic piece which she wrote herself. These were complimented by a dance she choreographed herself. Miss OCS Electrical and Lighting, Chaka Laguerre followed with a dance she also choreographed herself. The other finalist in the talent competition was Marshagay Reynolds who sang her heart out doing Celine Dion’s “To Love You More”.
Miss Jamaica World Model was an intriguing affair with the contestants going up against each other to see who would be Miss Jamaica World Model 2008 and get that automatic spot in the top ten. The competition opened with Miss Jamaica World Model 2007, Renee Ellis in a golden design by Uzuri International. It was then on to the finalists to prove who had that signature walk. The Miss Jamaica World Model Competition was no ordinary catwalk affair as the ladies showcased interesting and breathtaking pieces from Lisa McIntosh of Neahlis Designs.The evening gown parade was the perfect blend of style and elegance as the ladies paraded in daring fashionable pieces by Uzuri International.
It was soon time for the announcement of the top ten finalists and the ladies waited with anxious breaths as they awaited their fate. The announcement of the top ten started with fast track winners who would be automatic qualifiers. Yanique Levy, Miss Optical Solutions was the first to breathe a sigh of relief as she was announced Miss Jamaica World Sports; Miss Ting, Monique Daley won the Model Competition; Miss Logo Stitch, Brittany Lyons was adjudged Beach Beauty; Miss Quality Dealers, Marshagay Reynolds won the Talent Competition and Raecine Williams won the Beauty with a Purpose award.Rounding out the top ten were Chaka Laguerre, Sian Watts, Danielle Bazzoni, Sydonie McBayne and Jade Grant.The top ten then went on to the interview section after which the top five finalists were selected. At the end of the night Marshagay Reynolds was Second Princess to Miss Jamaica World, Jade Grant was the First Princess and Brittany Lyons was Miss Jamaica World 2008.The show featured a stunning performance from Angel who sang her latest single, an olympic tribute song entitled "GOLDEN FEELING".Other performers included the new and rising group out of Western Jamaica, Soul4Soul.
Alvin Campbell was awarded for his many years of service to the Miss Jamaica World Pageant while pageant promoter, Mr. Mickey Haughton-James was celebrated for his work over the many years.Brittany now moves on to compete for Jamaica in the Miss World 2008 pageant. She will be following in a tradition of outstanding performances by Jamaicans on such a stage with our most outstanding achievers being Cindy Breakspare and Lisa Hanna who won the title in 1976 and 1993 respectively.
