i could be so nice.

...friends.

if you happened to make it out to our show with raleigh's clothing & shoes and richmond's set sail caravel, thanks beyond thanks. it felt good to get out & perform again. that performance marked the first tiime all seven performers within "virgineola" were under one roof playing together. we walked away thinking it was something special...we hope that you agree (NOTE: in typical fashion, we succumbed to another failed attempt at recording a live show, so, i guess we will never know firsthand).

we are still trying to get "kecoughtan" together. fortunately, our performances of late have helped us to flesh out the idea for "memorial to lovely mount". it's an intersting piece in that it is pretty much a "sister" track to "lost on the streets of berkeley" (both have functioned as set openers). nathan has been working on a vocal based piece called "lorraine" which will round out the tracks for the LP:

"lost on the streets of berkeley" "strawberry banks" "wolstenholme" "lorraine" "grand contraband camp" "memorial for lovely mount" "boyd's ferry" "burnt ordinary"

to all who have been asking, we are still planning on a 12" release of this material. apologies for any & all delays. we hope that the final output will merit your patience.

the near future should have us playing out a few more times (trying to get some shows in before fall semester starts up). we are also looking to get everything tracked & mixed for "kecoughtan". we are also throwing around the idea of recording a single jam that would most likely end up on a split release with someone you know. oh, the mystery...

so, early wednesday morning finds us well on our way to finishing up the tracking of "kecoughtan". here's where we are so far:

- "lost on the streets of berkeley": keys, acoustic, & banjo are complete. will be working on percussion tracks tomorrow. will be adding violin, then incorporating some found sounds. this one will most likely open the record.

- boyd's ferry": keys, acoustic, electric, & mandolin are complete. need to record the "vocal" track, as well as work out the ending of the song. at the moment, this is my favorite piece on the record.

- "strawberry banks": drums, keys, acoustic, & banjo are complete. still need to record the extra percussion tracks (most likely, this will get done on thursday). also, still need to incorporate the ambient noise tracks that have already been constructed.

- "burnt ordinary": just began this piece. drums, keys, & acoustic are complete. will work on banjo & violin tracks wednesday. also, looking to incorporate a short spoken word piece inbetween the two parts of this piece.

- "grand contraband camp": the first part of this piece is already complete, as it's the only piece left from the old 4 track process. the second part has been brought from the old four track sessions as well, as we are building from dan's original acoustic track. this will probably be completed thursday evening.

- "a memorial for lovely mount": this is the newest piece, concieved by our newest member, thomas. we will most likely begin laying this down on thursday.

- "white sulphur spirngs": dan & joey have written this jazzy, uptempo number. acoustic & drums have been completed. still working out the other instruments this piece.

- "wolstenholme": this companion piece to "strawberry banks" will be tracked & completed on friday. it's a simple drone that will incorporate keys & smaller, handheld instruments.

if you are reading this, thanks for your interest in our work. we look forward to having this completely tracked by week's end. once complete, you should find new tracks on the reverbnation site (www.reverbnation.com/virgineola) that sample what has been tracked this week.

first off, thanks for everyone who had nice things to say about our set last night at the good cherry! we were so excited to play that show, as it was another chance to be with friends. great sets all day long from the likes of andrew weathers & joe morgan, jonathan vassar & speckled bird, cj boyd, & liza kate. richmond photographer & good friend pj sykes was on site & kind enough to capture some stills of our set.

our next task is to get "kecoughtan" tracked. we will be working on the record from the 10th - 16th. we won't be playing out again for a month or so in an effort to get all the songs together. we are now working towards getting the album out by summer's end. apologies to all those who were hoping to see us in the next few weeks...

moving forward, we are going to try & play out as either a 6 or 7 piece, including violin, banjo, mandolin, hand drums, acoustic & electric guitar, drums, & piano. it will most likley mean we have to book shows with greater advance notice, but it seems to make the most sense sonically.

with surgical focus...

so, this is the 1st blog written under the guise of "virgineola". hope it reads well enough... yesterday, we performed downtown at the city armory as part of this year's green spring expo. it was neat, as we had the chance to watch some different folks from the community perform their dance routines before & after our set. overall, a decent experience. the expo itself was sort of weird, as it seemed that no one at the booths were trying to make eye contact with the patrons. there wasn't a ton of interaction going on. that was not the case at the stage. it was great to see little kids dancing along to the music for each of the dance classes. it was also cool to see people gravitate towards our performance. thanks to the new friends we made & thanks to our good friend amy for inviting us to be a part of it. i think that 1/2 of the group is getting together this week to demo a new piece. if all goes well, we will try to track some of it for the upcoming LP, "kecoughtan". either way, we are hoping to get something new up on this site, as well as the facebook site, by week's end. we are also going to (fingers crossed) track "kecoughtan" during the second week of may. rumor has these sessions travelling to points undisclosed to get a proper mixing for the 12". who knows... finally, we will be performing for the next couple of weekends. next weekend will have us down in gladys, playing a benefit concert for our friend mike (NOTE - this is not a benefit for mike per se. we are playing at the request of mike...the benefit is for the kids work that he & his wife do in those parts. also of note, mike plays percussion for us now). the 2nd of may has us over at the good cherry for the "EVENT!". we will be sharing the stage with our friends jonathan vassar/speckled bird, birdlips, mild winter, rory tyer, & many, many more. we are also jazzed to have a special guest perform with virgineola for that show...should prove entrancing. nathan . virgineola
