Our Plans for 2013

Hey everyone! I'm Jake, the drummer for PARIAH, and I just want to give you a little heads up on our plans for this year. We recently released the PARIAH: Demo (formerly Human EP), and we were blown away by the response you guys gave us. We knew we had a couple fans, but we didn't know that we had so many devoted and supporting fans, friends, and family. We were really humbled by the response and enthusiasm, and we hope that we can continue to live up to your expectations.

As that was only a small demo of our debut album, this year we will be working on the album. We have a few ideas of what it will be called, but we aren't going to release the name just yet. We will be going to a studio over the summer at Elon College (Where Addison goes to school) and recording the whole album there, as well as mix it and master it.

After we have released it, we plan on playing as many shows as we can, hopefully with our friends at Surrounding Jericho and The Audio Brothers. I am also working on an acoustic project called Adonis, and PARIAH will hopefully work with me and we can have a good variety of styles for you guys at future events.

All in all, keep on giving us your support, you are the best fans EVER, and like always, we only have one all-encompassing request.

Get Excited.

God bless,

JMK

Demain dès l'aube

Hey everyone! It looks like Human EP is almost finished, and we’re psyched to finally be able to share it with you guys. With the album release hopefully within the next two months, I (Addison) decided to write a post about one of our songs that has taken on a very special meaning to me. “Tomorrow From Dawn (Demain dès l’aube)” is a song I wrote almost three years ago. It was one of the first songs I wrote for PARIAH and the oldest song that made it onto our debut EP.

The original “Demain dès l’aube”, a poem written by famous French author Victor Hugo, is a passionate account of love and determination. The poem recounts a journey taken by the narrator to reach a loved one. The narrator forsakes everything around him that would distract him from accomplishing his goal. But in the end, he finds his loved one only to place flowers on her grave. Hugo wrote this poem in memory of his daughter, who had drowned in a shipwreck at nineteen years old; it is perhaps his most famous poetic work.

I read this poem in my French class in high school, and it left a large impact on me. This was around the time that PARIAH was forming, and I almost immediately started writing a song based on the poem. Although most of my early songs were admittedly awful, I have changed almost nothing from my first draft, which incorporated many lines directly translated from the poem. The song begins with the first stanza of the poem in its original French:

Demain, dès l'aube, à l'heure où blanchit la campagne,
Je partirai. Vois-tu, je sais que tu m'attends.
J'irai par la forêt, j'irai par la montagne.
Je ne puis demeurer loin de toi plus longtemps.

(Tomorrow, from dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens, I will leave. You see, I know that you wait for me. I’ll go through the forest, I’ll go through the mountains. I cannot remain far away from you any longer.)

But it was almost two years later when the poem and the song took on much more meaning to me. In September 2011, my grandfather – also the grandfather of our drummer Jake and guitarist Spencer – passed away suddenly from a heart attack. We were devastated. While recovering from this tragedy, I became attached to “Demain dès l’aube” because I had become deeply familiar with the emotions that Hugo felt and portrayed in it. This song, along with the whole album, has become a way to honor the memory of my grandfather, who was always very encouraging during our three-year process of forming PARIAH.

Human EP is dedicated to the memory of Michael William Knight.

From all of us at PARIAH, thanks for taking the time to read this.

What We've Done

What a ride we've had. It was over two years ago that we (Spencer, Jake and I) first conceived the idea of a band. Since then, we've all been growing up, enhancing our skills, and truly "learning" music. By "learning", I'm not referencing music theory or anything of the like. For us, learning music is the process of finding enjoyment in what we do. It's not all about head knowledge, it's about how we change our music and how our music changes us.

Two years ago, I had written three solid songs for the band. Two of them, "Before You Say Anything" and "Tomorrow From Dawn", are up on our page right now. But they were just part of the early stages of our life as Pariah. I mean, Spencer and Jake didn't even play a part in the recordings. It was all done by myself and my guitar teacher. And those songs don't even sound like we do today.

Things change.

This past weekend, we played our second show as a full band. And we're nothing like the kids we used to be, dreaming of stardom and success. We've evolved into something real and tangible.

I just checked Facebook thirty seconds ago to see that we have finally just received the elusive one hundredth Facebook like. It feels like a milestone, but there are hopefully many more milestones to come. Feel free to come along for the ride.
