Biography:

Dale J. is an East Nashville Experimental folk musician. His live show consists of amplified acoustic instruments, strange projected footage, and a stomp box created from an upside down dresser drawer. He leads the audience down a unique road with stories, odd observations and humor. No two shows are exactly alike. He has been described as a fun mix of Frank Zappa, Bill Hicks, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, John Prine and just a touch of Butthole Surfers. His latest album entitled Folk Art Law will be released on March 9th 2016.
-Folk Art Law- A collection of experimentally crafted folk songs that drive the listener into a gratuitous state of enchanted abandon; using confrontational themes, refreshing arrangements, dark sincerity and an uncompromising satirical humor.

Press:

"It is so hard to create an acoustic album now a' days that is strong in terms of songwriting but also interesting and forward thinking in arrangement and production. You've accomplished this. Further, the subtleties in the construction of the songs is beyond my writing. I am inspired and captivated. Good work Sir." - JESSE ELLIOT- Songwriter
Jesse Elliot - Folk. Art. LAW Reviews- U.S.

“Hole Hearted. Slow and soulful, this song unfurls the story of a man who has lost things he has treasured. The whole feel of the song is the essence of a man drinking his blues away in pain and regret in a road side bar. The sense of loss rather than anger at being betrayed is evident and adds a beauty that mere rage would have glossed over. ‘There’s a hole in my heart in the shape of a beer.’ I can relate to that.”
David M. Beecroft - Folk. Art. Law. Reviews - U.K.

“Decency. A darkly wry sense of humour comes with this song as a counter point to the melancholic strain of self doubt and the struggle with the darker sides of our own natures. A simple, paired back number with just Dale and a guitar. The fast strummed strings conveying a sense of desperation as a man tries to be a better version of himself. ‘Midnight’s where I’ve lived all the time you dreamed’ is a beautiful line, bleakly poetic and filled with an almost fatalistic realisation of an inability to be other than our worst, no matter how we try.”
David M. Beecroft - Folk. Art. Law. Reviews - U.K.

“Dale J. Gordon – This artist from Trenton, NJ covers quite a lot of musical ground. His bio labels him as being a singer/songwriter which is something I had to listen to a few songs to validate. The submission I first listened to was fully electric with a Jimi Hendrix vibe, and it sounded good. Honestly I found the lyrics somewhat befuddling until I noticed the list of similar artists included Frank Zappa and Butthole Surfers. Apparently, this gentleman has released over 90 albums over the past 15 years! Prolific? I’d say so. Check him out”

“The booklet itself is a 20 page hand-produced collector’s item with each copy being individual numbered by Gordon himself. Stampy Goblyn’s illustrations complement Dale J’s words perfectly and all the poetry is hand-written, making the read that much more personal. As if a collection of poetry and a full length album are not enough, the back of the booklet is some sort of digital Ouija Board complete with an oracle to communicate with past one-night-stands."”

“Digital Wiccan Review (cont.) One of the true delights of the album is the harshly soothing contrast of Dale J. Gordon’s cigarette-stained vocals and the angelic echo of Shana Beatty on “Private Hell.” Gordon often describes his music as Americana but the album plays more like what we’d get if Frank Zappa, Tom Waits, GG Allin, and Violent J decided to make a folk album. And yes, that is a good thing. The booklet itself is a 20 page hand-produced collector’s item with each copy being individual numbered by Gordon himself. Stampy Goblyn’s illustrations complement Dale J’s words perfectly and all the poetry is hand-written, making the read that much more personal. As if a collection of poetry and a full length album are not enough, the back of the booklet is some sort of digital Ouija Board complete with an oracle to communicate with past one-night-stands.”

“DIGITAL WICCAN-review by chris brake- Undoubtedly the most ambitious release from Dale J. Gordon to date, Digital Wiccan is a collection of beautifully written prose combined with a compact disc busting at the seems with pure Dale J truth. As usual, his cynical view on women and their plan to destroy everything men stand for is ever present and more twisted than before. From thanking God for birth control in “Church Money” to nonchalantly confessing that he’s broken a few hearts in “Private Hell,” we can always expect Gordon to never hold back his romantic obsession with the evilness of women. He has a manner of writing songs that appear to be catchy love-dovey tunes at first glance. But upon further examination, songs such as “Belinda Belt Loosely” are full of loathing and skepticism towards the idea of love and relationships spun around a comical web of wit.”

“Dale J. Gordon The DEMO singer introduces himself to the world of freak folk with the 16-track release of “White Trash Jazz.” Hardly the grungy clatter we’re used to from the former Pats!e guitarist, Gordon seems to rediscover his Virginia roots on the new offering, which sways from lo-fi acoustics and delta blues to swampy, surrealistic country rock. There are some avant-garde clanks and free-form jazz jangles intertwined throughout, but a lot of it reminds us of Beck’s early folk and those weirder tracks that made Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen acceptable bizarre-men. Also for fans of Animal Collective, Panda Bear and Sufjan Stevens. He headlines The Backstage at Championships Bar (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tonight. Show starts at 8. RoebusOne, FreeDoom, Raymond Strife, Eric Moeller, Stomping Ground and Embracing Disaster play, too. Tickets cost $5. All-ages.”

“The former Pats!e singer/guitarist, current DEMO noise conductor, presents his “White Trash Jazz” sessions at McGuinn’s Place (1781 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence) Friday night. Not sure what that entails, but DEMO’s been working on this rap-rock project with spit-fire RoebusOne, so maybe they’ll be that unique style clash happening here. Show starts at 10. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.”

“...Dale’s from West Virginia but he’s been up in Trenton for quite a while. I’ve heard a number of things about him, from “his name isn’t really Dale” to “he’s faked his death twice — had an obit in the Trentonian, the whole 9.” when i first met him, i told him about tamur.records and he gave me a copy of his solo album, “Digital Wiccan.” ...musically, from the acoustic to the electric to the almost spoken-word tracks, it’s really fucking good. ...i’ve met a lot of people in the area — old and young — who know the record, or at least that Dale is a very talented musician & a unique guitarist (he plays any style well and i’ve never seen him use a pick). at least he’s got a goddamn personality. a strong point of view. DEMO’s a pretty far stride from “Digital Wiccan.” in DEMO, Dale exclusively plays guitar with an octave pedal. ...the addition of the tom player adds to a half-time, heavy, tribal feeling hinted at by Dale’s long dreadlocks.”

“The Trenton sound provider, whose icy funk-sampling beats and cool-breezing soul snips slide nicely over the X-rated rhyme schemes and head-ringing vocal detonations of the area’s top emcees, hosts the record release party for his new demo, “Don’t Do Drugs Kids,” at McGuinn’s Place...One half of To Live & Die in NJ, the clips obtained by On the Beat showcase an old school beat-minding appeal that’s like Prince Paul and Madlib sharing a nitrous balloon while listening to MC Esoteric’s “Egoclapper.” ...Over the years Swisschz has surrounded himself with area’s elite rhyme spitters, be it with To Live & Die in NJ or on Project Nemesis...Ray Strife, his bud in To Live & Die …, is on the record, along with On The Beat faves RoebusOne and Cap City’s Rocky. Fish, a metal singer in Embracing Disaster, is also featured. Show starts at 9. Dale J. Gordon and DEMO, Raymond Strife, GDP, Pistol Pete, Shape, RoebusOne, Machine Gun Funk (with Silence), Gliss and Embracing Disas”
Scott Frost - Swisschz (Greater Trenton live & local music listings)

“The DEMO singer, guitarist and avant-garde poet plays solo at The Backstage at Championship Bar (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tomorrow night. Show starts at 7. Tickets cost $10. All-ages. ”
Scott Frost - Dale J. Gordon (Greater Trenton, NJ, live & local music listings)

“Here’s a Trenton band that messes with your head. The thunderous roar of the first 40 seconds of the city instrumentalists’ only MySpace offering, “Postgame Carnage Report,” appears as if it’s about to plow into some Unsane-type ear-drubbing. (Awesome, BTW!) Doesn’t stay that way, though. Gets erratically jazz-jam-y for a bit. Then there’s the xylophone dance. And it gets all System Of A Down heavy at the end. Thought there was Mars Volta influences in the hi-fi boyabase. Maybe Dysrhythmia, too. In hiding for a while, the foursome roll into Championship Sports Bar and Grill (931 Chambers St., Trenton) tomorrow night. Show starts at 7. Dale J. Gordon (DEMO, Pats!e) opens. Tickets cost $8. 21-plus.”
Scott Frost - Imbala (Trentonian On the Beat live & local music listings)

“Hailing from Red Bank with New Deal-style keyboard psychedelics and geek-rock antics, the guys hit Joe’s Mill Hill Saloon (300 S. Broad St., Trenton) at 9 tomorrow night with tie-dye T-shirts for sale. Daddy Green Jeans and ex-Pats!e frontman, Dale J. Gordon, join in on post-Black Friday fun. Tickets cost $5. 21-plus.”

“Dale J. Gordon was once the dreaded frontman of Trenton grunge band Pats!e. Since their demise last year hes settled into a nice solo career acting as the Tom Waits of the Trenton music scene, but soaked in booze and influenced by Melvins records. He might have broken the area record for performances last year, as it seemed like he was playing around town every weekend. Well, its his birthday today or at least hes celebrating it tonight at Championships Sports Bar & Grill in Trenton. The flyer promoting the event has a picture of a squirrel sitting at the bar downing a Guinness. Not sure we get the joke. Guessing no matter how many times you try to get rid of those rodents getting into your trash, they always show up the next day to mooch on a free beer and a stage to play on.”
