Kavawon is an O.G. pioneer of his hometown scene (Nanaimo, B.C.).
His first group started in 1997 with his cousin, Kesole & brother, Evo Freez.
The leader and heart of 2 groups (the ITAP family & Homegrown Inc.),
that would solidify a local hip-hop scene that had previously seen all
local talents jump ship to the mainland (Vancoucer) to establish
themselves in a much larger scene. ITAP grew from the original trio
or Kavawon, Kesole & Evo Freez to later include cousins Maka Natural
and Fa'poso. ITAP would be the first local hip-hop group to get hired
by bars & clubs to perform. This success would last a few years, but
as ITAP's drive started to fade, Kava & Freez had bigger fish to fry;
enter Homegrown Inc.
Homegrown would basically grow and thrive as ITAP began to falter.
Kavawon & Evo Freez were the driving force behind Homegrowns early
beginnings and their experience with ITAP made them true leaders to
the Homegrown crew and helped them build Nanaimo's first
juggernaut. Homegrown would expand and improve upon ITAP's
accomplishments, being the first group to bring in famous
acts to do shows; legends such as the world famous Beatnuts, the
Visionaries, Aceyalone etc. This would also open the door for other
local hip-hop acts to have the same opportunities that had previously
been unheard of for local talent.
Creative differences, personality clashes, mismanagement of group
funds & excessive drug use all had a role in the eventual unravelling of
Homegrown Inc.
Life's changes eventually brought him to Edmonton Alberta where
Kava would soon meet Rellik and be introduced to another local legend
in his own right; Draztik a member of the local all-star group,
Gzus Murphy, who in many respects was the Edmonton version of
Homegrown Inc. The saying "real recognize real" would holdtrue as Kava
seemed to fit in almost instantly and soon would establish himself
through ascociation and of course ability, as one of Edmonton's
elite M.C's as well.
The following years would see Kavawon returning to Vancouver Island,
he did keep close ties w/ Draztik, still finding time to drop in & record @
Defstar studios anytime he would pass through Edmonton. In 2014 while
dropping in to record he let Draz checkout his solo album he was wrapping
up. Draz & partner J-Busy were very impressed w/ what they heard and
made the offer to Kava to sign to their newly formed label Defstar
Entertainment which would eventually change to Defstar Artist
Management.
In August 2015 Kavawon's album "Destiny waits for nobody" officially
dropped as Defstar's first professional release. Featuring his longtime
producer and close friend from the Homegrown Inc. days, DJ Stelos
as the primary producer, his lifelong partner in rhyme; younger brother
Evo Freez being some of the mainstays on the album. A joint both
produced by, and featuring Canadian hip-hop legend Moka Only,
"Treetops", is one of the Album highlights that accompany the albums
main 2 singles "Hourglass" and "It never rains on Vancouver island" ft.
Reveal & QB. This album was also mastered by one of Canada's elite
producers, Nato.
As of right now Kavawon is focused on his next Defstar release; another
solo project titled "Def certificate".
“Another standout track is "Just 17". MC Kava-1... one of the [Paper Cha$erz] mixtape's organizers, paints a great picture of a down-on-his-luck 17 year old, which weaves together a story of loss, maturity, coming of age, and the trappings of poverty into some pretty clever rapping. It's refreshing to hear more image and story driven rapping, especially a story that continues from the beginning of the song and follows through to the end. Kava-1's flow is dead on, and it's easy to hear some of his more old school and underground influences...”
Rick Louie... review of the "Paper Cha$erz vol.1" mixtape - www.Indabamusic.com
"...Practicing in hip-hop what KRS-One once called "edutainment", Kava-1 seeks to use his prodigious rapping skills to preach motivated and socially conscious messages. And, with a flow that's always on point, he pulls it off... Kava-1 is also one of the founders of the Paper Cha$erz [franchise], who are now working on their sophomore mixtape as a follow up to their successful project "Paper Cha$erz Vol. 1".
