My name is Billy Sugarfix. I live on top of the highest mountain in Carrboro, NC. From the tower of my castle, I can see three planets as yet undiscovered by mainstream scientists. On extrememly calm nights when the moon is in a gibbous phase, I can pick up signals from these distant spheres. The first one tells me to write and perform pop songs with pretty melodies, the second planet tells me to write silly songs and use nothing but a chipmunk voice to sing with, the third planet tells me to get a bunch of electronic gadgets and make noise. So, dear friend, if you'd like to help me figure out which far away world I should try to please, then kindly listen to the music here and send me a message with your heartfelt advice.
“Sugarfix sings lyrically earnest and heartfelt songs, sounding like the B-52’s Fred Schneider with an Andy Kaufman ambience. His music isn’t comedy, but a variety show of styles. There’s a distance to it, like old-time radio through a modern pop filter. His album “Summer Tempests” germinated from a break-up, a New Orleans visit just before Katrina and a visit afterward. Songs are beautiful but brutal, derived from loneliness, obsession and maturation.”
Brian Tucker - StarNews (Wilmington)
“Billy Sugarfix's first release with his new band, Carousel, is a '50s nerd-chic pop gem.”
Ashley Mezler - Independent Weekly
“After years of being a trickster, a Peter Pan-ish figure of innocent mischief, Sugarfix is ready to get real. He's stepping on the pedals now, and minding the gauges.”
Brian Howe - Independent Weekly
““I should rent some movies / Lock myself in my room / Try to get my drinking under control / Post a new entry to a blog that no one reads / And concede / That I’m getting old,” Billy Sugarfix reasons in the first lines on the first track (“Out Like a Lamb”) of his latest record Summer Tempests. But, if you’ve caught even a whisper of any of Sugarfix’s incredibly creative output, then you know that isn’t reason, it’s madness and it’s exactly the opposite of what needs to happen. No concession, no “getting older” so-called maturity should impede the art that so seemingly nonchalantly flows through his head and out to his fingertips”
Ashley Metzler - Carrboro Citizen (The Mill)
“The great Summer Tempests thrives on these moments, when Sugarfix juxtaposes his own dark predilections with music that's buoyant and cheery. He realizes both the lugubrious bent of his lyrics and the barely inflected brooding of his baritone.”
Grayson Currin - Independent Weekly
“To the mix CD mavens out there hoping to strike the right chord with that special someone, meet Billy Sugarfix (aka Billy McCormick).”
Luis Torres - The Daily Tar Heel
“Part of the (Summer Tempests) album's charm lies in Sugarfix’s ability to craft an array of sardonic yet honest lyrics. Alternating between stinging barbs and woe-stricken musings with the deftness of a master songwriter, he turns songwriting into poetry.”
Linnie Greene - DTH Diversions
