Bio: THE HOUSE CAFÉ: BECOMING ONE WITH THE COMMUNITY No two coffee shops are the same. Each java club has its own regulars and particular atmosphere. This rule is definitely true for the House Café, located at 263 E. Lincoln Hwy, DeKalb. When first entering this homegrown coffee shop you can’t help but notice a positive energy—some may even call it “feng shui.” Decorated with paintings by local artists and what appear to be giant twisted pipe-cleaners hanging from the ceiling, this is the perfect atmosphere to evoke creativity and curiosity. This atypical café has been bringing together local musicians, students and coffee-lovers for almost ten years and continues to grow as one of the area’s premier sources of all-ages live entertainment. While the House Café stands out as a business, the story that led this small business to where it is today is as interesting as any. BACKGROUND The House Café is a downtown DeKalb business that offers food at a reasonable price and serves as a venue for musicians on nearly a nightly basis. It may have opened less than a decade ago, but in that time the House Café has made significant strides in engaging the community. Aside from hosting shows, the House has become popular among NIU students because of its comfortable study environment and affordable coffee drinks. The House also takes advantage of the fact that it is one of the few all-ages venues in DeKalb. This allows the House to host a wide variety of shows that appeal to many different audiences and age groups. The kind of events the coffee shop hosts range anywhere from high school dances to free NIU jazz jams to indie and death metal shows. While the audiences may be diverse, the House has no problem attracting musicians of all genres.
