Graham Brown, a Glasgow-born, Edmonton-raised songwriter, has carved a unique path in Vancouver’s music scene. As a founding member of Junior Gone Wild, Brilliant Orange, and Happyman, he’s delivered 15 albums over three decades, with Outside Within (2025) marking his latest triumph. This 15th release, recorded live at Hipposonic Studios, channels the raw, electric energy of Tom Petty and Neil Young, blending folk/rock grit with heartfelt lyrics about courage, love, and life’s tensions. Brown’s philosophy—capturing first or second takes—defines Outside Within. With his trusted band, Mark Gruft (drums), John Werner (bass), Rob Blackburn (piano, organ, guitar, vocals), and Brown himself (vocals, guitars, harmonica), the album was tracked in one room, engineer Dave Meszaros at the helm. Songs like “Courage Comes,” inspired by Terry Fox, and “Graveyard Trees” were road-tested, nailed in single takes for authenticity.
