About the Artist

Graham Brown, a Glasgow-born, Edmonton-raised songwriter, has carved a unique path in Vancouver’s music scene. As a founding member of Junior Gone Wild, Brilliant Orange, and Happyman, he’s delivered 15 albums over three decades, with Outside Within (2025) marking his latest triumph. This 15th release, recorded live at Hipposonic Studios, channels the raw, electric energy of Tom Petty and Neil Young, blending folk/rock grit with heartfelt lyrics about courage, love, and life’s tensions. Brown’s philosophy—capturing first or second takes—defines Outside Within. With his trusted band, Mark Gruft (drums), John Werner (bass), Rob Blackburn (piano, organ, guitar, vocals), and Brown himself (vocals, guitars, harmonica), the album was tracked in one room, engineer Dave Meszaros at the helm. Songs like “Courage Comes,” inspired by Terry Fox, and “Graveyard Trees” were road-tested, nailed in single takes for authenticity. Spontaneity shines in tracks like “When Your Heart Aches,” where Brown switched keys to E-flat on a whim, creating a tense, open vibe. “Trestle Track,” a Dylan-esque groove, came together after one run-through, the band laughing at its effortless magic. This approach, honed since Born To Entertain (1992), keeps Brown’s music conversational yet profound, like a chat over whiskey. Outside Within follows the rock & roll pulse of Hiwatt (2011) and Give & Take (2014), departing from the country/rock of Good ‘n Broke (2001) or Solo (2023). Its lyrics, paired with uncommon chord progressions, evoke love, disappointment, and forgiveness, resonating with fans of Dylan’s storytelling and Petty’s heartland swagger. The album’s earthy album art, designed with your visual expertise, complements its sound, inviting listeners to crank it up through good headphones for hidden “ear candy.” Brown’s process thrives on instinct. He tosses unrehearsed songs at his band, capturing raw moments—like asking Meszaros if the tape’s rolling before “When Your Heart Aches.” This keeps the music alive, unpolished, and urgent, a hallmark of his 30-year career across Sunburst (1995), Brand New Smile (1998), and Spirit and Soul (2021).
