Bio
White Apple Tree’s sound has been described as eclectic, complex, occasionally awkward and witty. Although Ryan Lawhon, with brother Taylor Lawhon and drummer Stefan Mac are based out of Northern San Diego and South Orange County, their music is far from the Southern California surf rock norm. With lush ambient guitars, quirky synths and the occasional “four on the floor” kick, White Apple Tree has created a unique and refreshing take on modern electronic music.

“White Apple Tree is certainly on their way with their latest album, Velvet Mustache. For the record, this isn’t by any means a bad album. The production is clean, the musicianship is fine, and there’s no auto-tune. The album really succeeds when it’s not trying so hard to fuse dance beats with pop. “Sleep” and the sprawling “Outro” both show some measure of sonic risk taking, feeling more free form and experimental than anything on the album while they take the listener on an ambient adventure. The stripped down simplicity of “Bombs” shows that, beneath the all of the synth-touched sparkle and wow of the other songs, there’s actual songwriting happening. The plaintive, folk jam feels like a gem amongst the over-polished tracks that preceded it. There are good songs to be had on Velvet Mustache”
