Diaspora Remixed is a community global beat project featuring electro-world DJs met on the tour trail around Europe. Transglobal Underground, Shazalakazoo, EarthRise SoundSystem, Dunkelbunt, Dj Click, Gaetano Fabri, BalkanXpress, Undergang, Spark, Mars Exist, Barrio Populaire and Stratman put their personal spin on W-Clan's Diaspora Hi-Fi, a 2008 World Music Charts Europe top album.

It's been ten years since the music of Watcha Clan started moving to the rhythm of the waters of the Mediterranean. The ten year watershed has marked a new start for the band. The party continues...

This fluid scene's distinctive electro sound powers the clan into new territory. Speeding forward through frenetic rhythms or rendering homage to their roots, the clan, a real family embodied in the voice of Sista K, never forget their destiny or their mission, their search for space and freedom. Above all, they are true nomads in the world of music.

Nomadic means independent, and it has always been crucial for this clan to make their own decisions, go forward at their own pace and set their own agenda. As they go out on the road again Sista K, Clem, Matt and Soupa Ju – who has moved his talents from the sunlight to the comparative obscurity of management to great effect – met the independent Berlin label PIRANHA Musik. By a happy calendar coincidence, this is PIRANHA's 20th year in business, and so this fusion of worlds and meeting of generations came at the perfect time. In a buzz of mutual esteem, the two parties decided to nurture the Diaspora Hi-Fi project together.

Always on the move, Sista K's family history is intimately entwined with her music. She's Ashkenazi through her mother and Sephardic and Berber through her father, an Algerian independence fighter who was French before he was born (an 1870 decree gave French nationality to the Jewish population of Algeria). She could have been born in the land of Israel, where her parents met, but saw the light of day in the shadow of Marseille's Bonne Mère. La Belle de Mai, La Busserine, Le Merlan are all inextricably part of her personal geography; her own Bermuda Triangle in which she could never loose herself and which helped forge the consummate woman she is today. “Back then,” she says, “in the northern quarters of Marseille, no-one cared who was Jewish and who was Muslim. We all lived together, and life was always stimulating.”

Jewish, Muslim, Catholic or atheist? It doesn't matter, she seems to be saying, as long as you have faith. Faith in man and woman, for no other reason than brotherhood, Sista! This expansion of the heart denies the very idea of borders. Whether free to move or driven to do so, these men and women represent a possible future, a plausible future, even if Théodore Monod, the wise man's wise man whom they sample generously, once said: “For the State, a free man is unacceptable...”

Altruistic dealers in cultures and humanities, they juggle rhythms and languages (French, Arabic, Hebrew, English) to the beat of the memories they have, the people they meet and the places they see. From the Eastern European melodies Karine's mother sang to her when she was little to the chaabi, the Algerian blues Nassim the “khouya” (brother) from Oran, a friend and collaborator since 2003, introduced them to, from the cherifian grooves of Amarg Fusion to the burning lyrics of the Bourbia brothers, the MCs of Tox from Oran, to the hip-hop kick that appeals to Clem, the clan's music man and sampler extraordinaire; Diaspora Hi-Fi, their new album, sings with the freedom of spirit of travelling people. “It gets us involved, it motivates us,” Ka and Clem say in chorus. “We saw where our road was leading, and we've been on that road since.” They're free and committed, and above all, they are nomads.

Dix ans déjà que la musique de Watcha Clan joue avec la bande sur le tapis vert de la Grande Bleue. A l'heure de l'anniversaire, ils ont su rebondir, avec force, casser le jeu comme on dit au billard. Ce renouveau a même failli les amener à déposer leur nom sur le bord de la route pour repartir plus léger encore, comme neuf. Finalement, le clan recomposé est toujours là. C'est lui qui présente Diaspora Hi-Fi, leur nouveau projet. La «party» peut recommencer.

Clairement électro, le son de ce monde en mouvement propulse le clan dans de nouvelles sphères. Qu'ils grapillent ici une accélération subite du temps ou déposent là, un hommage enraciné, le clan, véritable famille incarnée par la voix de Sista K, n'oublie jamais son sort, sa mission, sa quête d'espace et de liberté. Nomades avant tout !

Nomades, donc indépendants ! Décider par eux-mêmes, avancer à leurs rythmes, fixer leur propre cap est vital pour ce clan. A l'heure de se remettre en route, Sista K, Clem, Matt et Soupa Ju, qui par souci d'efficacité est passé des sunlights à la pénombre, ont rencontré Christoph Borkowsky Akbar, figure mythique des musiques du monde et boss du label indépendant berlinois Piranha Musik. Hasard des calendriers, Piranha fête cette année son vingtième anniversaire. Choc des mondes, des générations, cette rencontre ne pouvait mieux tomber. Mutuellement séduits, ils décident de porter ensemble ce Diaspora Hi-Fi.

Jamais en place, Sista K rejoue à chaque instant son histoire familiale. Ashkénaze par sa mère, sépharade et berbère par son père, un militant indépendantiste Algérien qui, avant même de naître fût reconnu français (en 1870, le décret Crémieux concéda la nationalité française à la population juive d'Algérie), elle aurait pu naître en Israël où ses parents se sont connus. Sista K a vu le jour à l'ombre de la Bonne Mère. La Belle de Mai, La Busserine, Le Merlan ; c'est sa géographie intime, son triangle des Bermudes. Elle ne s'y perdra jamais, bien au contraire. Elle reconnaît même, des années après que cet univers a forgé la femme qu'elle est aujourd'hui, l'a aidée à se trouver. «A l'époque, dans les Quartiers Nord, on ne se souciait pas de savoir si l'on était juif ou musulman. On vivait ensemble» souligne-t-elle, «et cette vie était très stimulante !».

Juif, musulman, catholique ou même athée ? Qu'importe pourvu qu'on ait la foi, semble-t-elle affirmer. Pourvu qu'on ait la foi dans l'homme, la femme sans autre motif que celui de la fraternité, Sister ! Cet élan du coeur anéantit la notion même de frontière. Libres de circuler ou contraints de le faire, ces hommes et ces femmes constituent un avenir possible, un futur plausible, même si selon Théodore Monod un sage parmi les sages qu'ils samplent en grande largeur : «Pour les ministères, pour les bureaux, un homme libre, c'est inacceptable...».

Passeurs de cultures et d'humanités, ils jonglent avec les rythmes, avec les langues (français, arabe, hébreu, anglais) au gré des souvenirs, des rencontres, des haltes. Des rengaines d'Europe de l'Est que chantait à sa fille la mère de Karine; au chaâbi , ce blues algérien transmis par Nassim le «khouya» d'Oran rencontré en 2003 et revu depuis régulièrement, au groove chérifien des Gadiriens d'Amarg Fusion, aux lyrics enflammés des frères Bourbia, les deux MCs du groupe oranais Tox ou au kick hip-hop qu'affectionne Clem, le musicien du clan et virtuose du sampleur ; Diaspora Hi-Fi, leur nouvel album, revendique la liberté d'esprit des gens du voyage. « Ça nous engage, nous motive » assurent en choeur Ka et Clem. «Depuis qu'on a compris par où passait notre chemin, on l'arpente dans tous les sens.».
