Q: How long have you been playing the violin? You are an extraordinary talent. I thoroughly enjoy listening to your performances.
A: First of all thank you for your nice comments. In the beginning, my way to become classical violinist was not conventional. I started to play the violin when I was 9. Four years later I was listening to bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Santana, and Frank Zappa just to name a few. Then more and more jazz like Miles Davies, Herbie Hancock, Modern Jazz Quartet, Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Grapelli, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Jean Luc Ponty. In 1969, I got the LP by The Flock with the violinist Jerry Goodman. I was so impressed with the band and this way of violin playing, that I began to practice violin more. So I came slowly to the decision of being a professional musician. The classical music became more and more important later - especially chamber music of all epochs. As a student, I began to listen a lot the violin players like David Oistrakh, Jasha Heifetz, Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Fritz Kreisler and Misha Elman. I began to perform professionally in the year 1979. Please read more in my Interview for Spinner.com - Question: How did you get started performing? http://www.spinner.com/2010/03/13/volodja-balzalorsky-interview-sxsw-2010/
