Doors at 7.30pm Music at 8.00pm For decades, Doc Span and Nick Charles have travelled the wide world of acoustic blues and roots. Doc, a native of New Jersey, has a long association with Chicago’s legendary “Southside” blues clubs and toured the US extensively before settling down under. Here he has created a powerful performance and recording presence. Nick, with more than thirty years touring and performing and a dozen albums worldwide, unites his acclaimed guitar skills with Doc’s legendary harmonica prowess to deliver an inspiring combination. With a passion for the greatest blues duo, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Nick and Doc have released “All About Sonny and Brownie” , a unique tribute, featuring their classic songs as well as some reverential original tunes. Since his solo journey began in 1999 he has garnered substantial critical acclaim for a series of releases beginning with My Place and now his most recent albums, Closer to Home and Return of the Travelling Fingerpicker. With his trademark dazzling fingerpicking on 6 and 12 string guitars, stinging slide and a lifetime’s stories and songs it’s a show that sees him labelled by The Age as Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues‖ and by Australian Guitar magazine as an awesome talent! Nick performs nearly 150 shows each year, traveling throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United States, and Black Rose is very happy to have him share his amazing talents with our members.
THE 2013 “ACOUSTIC GUITAR SPECTACULAR” with Michael Fix, Nick Charles and Paul Wookey Each year the Thornbury Theatre holds host to the guitar and roots music event of the year, the annual “Acoustic Guitar Spectacular”. Once again it features the sublime skills of Michael Fix, Nick Charles and Paul Wookey- a diverse range of fiery guitar magic, impassioned roots music and classic acoustic instrumentals and songs. Michael has an extensive touring career, a vast catalogue of stunning recordings and the stagecraft born of a lifetime on the world’s stages. Nick is known internationally as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” (a quote from The Age) and Paul has long been regarded as one Australia’s finest voices and pickers as well as a legendary interpreter of traditional roots music. Together they present an event not to be missed. There will be solo as well as ensemble performances, lots of musical surprises as well as delights and pieces long regarded as their crowds favourites. The Velvet Room is located on the ground floor of the venue. Wheelchair access is via the front door. There are 3 steps into the Velvet Room. Access without steps can be arranged.
