About

Bio: Irreverent. Melancholy. From the gleefully tongue-in-cheek sarcastic snarkiness of "So Glad..." to the somber, painful-truth seeking of "Better This Way?"

As a writer I find myself often reveling in or celebrating the slightly darker side of the mind: being in that grey, between the lines of who... See Full Bio

Q: Do you find it difficult to be an openly gay musician?
A: Good question! Do I find it difficult to be an openly gay musician? Yes and no. I don't find it _difficult_ but I do find it more challenging. As a solo/lead performer gauging the audience is always a trick. I'm not even sure if they like my original material or performance _regardless_ of that aspect. Fortunately I've been pretty spoiled in places like Philly and NYC where, when I bring up the gay thing, people don't seem to bat an eyelash (real OR fake!). I've also kept myself somewhat sheltered and often play for LGBT-specific audiences. As a side musician it's less of an issue. If I'm performing with a gay/queer front person I stay a little extra aware of the audience. But generally the focus is and should be on the person I am accompanying. As a teacher I think it's the most challenging. I'm not worried about my kids as much as I'm sometimes worried about their parents and what the parents may think, assume, or concoct. On the other hand, I think that being gay has allowed me to approach some topics - love, self-esteem/value, etc - from a different point of view than your traditional vapid pop song. So yay for that!
