Bio
Born the youngest of twelve children, Tom was surrounded by music making siblings from an early age. He began playing guitar at age 6 and was really cool. Skipping ahead, he studied composition under Max Lifchitz at SUNY Albany where he got his bachelors in composition (1998) and music theory under John McGinness at the Crane School of Music, writing his master's thesis on Black Sabbath in 2001. The Ohio State University was next, where he "studied" theory and composition under Jan Radzynski, Marc Ainger and Gregory Proctor (to name drop a few) while playing in several local bands. He hopes to complete his PHD one day and he also likes peanut butter. A lot.
About
As you might have gleaned, I didn't write all of these. "Red Baron" is by Billy Cobham, "Well You Needn't" is Thelonius Monk, and "Song For my Father" is Horace Silver. The band performing those tunes is The Hairy C raig Jazz Explosion featuring myself on guitar, Craig Harpley on sax, Carl Olson on keys, Kevin Keister on drums, and Scott Maruskin on bass. Recorded in August 2008 in Craig's basement. "Gumby's Last Ride" was written by myself and Eric Allen. We were both in The Mad Hatters. That's me singing and playing guitar and bass, Eric is on rhythm guitar, and Evan Masten is on the drums. Recorded by Stuart Provine in August 1999.

All of the midi files on this website were written starting in May of 2009. I wrote music before then, but not as well in my eyes...something clicked about that time. The score for "Ballet Buffo" will soon be available through FishCreek Music, my first publication, for which I am indebted to reverbnation (that's how the publisher first heard my piece).
What I try to acheive in many of my pieces is a balance between listenability and adventure. I like it when music sounds "weird" but I also enjoy character and familiarity. Most of my music is written in a sort of fractured tonality where any and all key relations are possible, slipping between mod-12 mappings and mod-7 mappings. In a perfect world there would be equality among all styles of music. I dream of a better tomorrow and so on.
