About

The Turf began in the summer of 2006 when four high school friends and musicians decided to start a dance band to play for their friends at house parties. The youngsters were immensely excited and motivated, with two of their fathers being lifelong musicians themselves. Throughout the fall, they practiced multiple times a week working on new songs and, more importantly, a new sound. At the time they were listening to bands ranging from Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon to The Rapture and LCD Soundsystem. What they wanted was to create an edgy, indie rock sound that maintained a heavy dance feel as well as catchy melodies.

They simply wanted to make people move.

Gradually they learned that many music venues doubt the maturity and musicianship of young artists, especially ones still in high school. It was difficult to book shows in the beginning, but as the small number of actual shows at venues increased, so did their buzz... which understandably made booking a bit easier.

Their first time in the studio was in March, 2007 where they recorded five tracks in four days; this session later served as the foundation of their first released EP entitled “To the Disco”. A few days later the Zeitgeist Festival at USN was absolutely rocked by The Turf, who opened for local favorites Turbo Fruits. They were soon asked to play Grimey's Cinco de Mayo Sale at local record store “Grimey's”.

That summer they spent writing new material and searching for inspiration. After a few more shows around Nashville, they were asked to open for world-touring pop band How I Became the Bomb at Nashville's own Mercy Lounge. A relentless energy pervaded onstage, and it was evident to everyone in the room: these kids are true musicians, a true band.

Three of them decided to go to college in the fall of 2007... guitarist Slade to Paris, drummer Nick to Rhode Island, and bassist Nigel to Boston. Thousands of miles apart from each other, the band continued to talk, come up with new ideas, and write... constantly. Their survival is a testimony to their commitment to their music and their love for art. The college life also provided them with new experiences to draw from when attempting to convey feelings or situations through music. The Turf kicked the New Year off with a highly anticipated show at Mercy Lounge on January 3rd. Now the band's only priority is creating new edgy dance songs for listeners to enjoy. Keep your ears open.

“Verdict: totally danceable.” – Tracy Moore, Nashville Cream

“...extremely promising... theirs is a very likable take on that chugging guitar and driving beat formula, and fortunately you don't have to be underage to dance along” – Andrew J. Smithson, Nashville Scene
