Bio

The Monologue Bombs is the solo moniker of Scott Phillips, who switches from piano to accordion to guitar and back, his voice focused always on the verite scene-setting, the drives of the characters, and the ugly/beautiful truths of their stories.

Recently (2009), The Monologue Bombs has gone full-band, adding bar-band and atmospheric indie-folk flavors, courtesy of friends like Brian Donohoe (Starmount, drums), Andy Kerr (The T's, Static Minds, guitar), Hunter MacDermut (The Tourist, banjo, guitar, vocals, harmonica), David Mueller (Birds Of Avalon, bass, vocals), and Anne Polesnak (Physics Of Meaning, cello). The results have only heightened the dynamics of Phillips's, taking them to new heights of joy, sadness, and inbetween.

About

For people who've seen a solo Monologue Bombs show or listened to the debut album Beverages + Ghosts, the flavor crystals are easy to spot (Springsteen, Buckner, Gibbard, Black, Bragg, etc), but The Monologue Bombs is a singular experience of sinner-songwriting. Spare, yet inviting. Smart, yet still starry-eyed.

But from here (2009) on out, this will only be part of the story, as the addition of several friends (who also happen to be some of the best musicians in the Raleigh area), has created a new kind of Monologue Bombs experience. While retaining the attention to detail of Phillips's songs and voice, the new version adds the bar-band exuberance of a, say, Hold Steady, while some of the folkier and dense arrangements push the songs organically into a Sufjan Stevens territory.

Stay tuned!
