Bio
The story of The Hollow begins in 2001 when Duncan and Dean started jamming together in Duncan’s old garage. As time moved on, people joined and left the band and it seemed as though trying to find members that were of a similar mindset was going to be an impossible task. 3 more years passed when, they found Catlyn jamming on stage with a local band, Bytesize. Sensing her potential they wasted no time in recruiting her. 4 more years went slowly by, along with a number of musicians, when Fly was introduced to the band by their old singer Lewis McLean in May 2008. A few more weeks passed when Fly met Wojtek at a party . He was auditioned and upon hearing his brutal voice and seeing his passion for metal, he was recruited. The Hollow was born.
About
Wojtek Starzak:
Discovered by Fly, he is one of the latest members of The Hollow since May 2008 and brings the brutal vocals to the band. Influenced by bands such as Linkin Park, As Blood Runs Black, Caliban and recently Winds of Plague, he is a mutant on stage! If you're a Burn or Winston local you will most likely recognize him from the label in his hand and the mohawk on his head or just look out for the first one to launch into the mosh! He is a valuable asset to the band and brings the brutal energy and passion that the Hollow is becomming recognized for!
Dean Thomson:
Dean is one of the founding members of the band and has been jamming along with Duncan King for the majority of his musical carreer (since 2001). He recieved his Honours degree in music and classical guitar in 2008 from the University of KZN. Dean's influences include Metallica, Trivium, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Sikth, Devildriver, Tool and Nonexist to name but a few. Dean's drive and dedication contributes extensively in all areas of the band. His energy on stage is contagious and reverberates through the audiences as he recieves yet another case of whiplash the next morning.
Duncan King:
As the other founding member, Duncan started drumming in 1999 by recieving lessons from Grant, the drummer for a local group called Bytesize. In 2001 he proceeded to go his own way and began practicing to some of his favourite bands; Korn, A.P.C, Metallica, Machinehead, Chimaira, Bleeding Through, Soilwork, Sikth, White Chapel, All that Remains, Cradle of Filth etc. His musical experience has solely been with The Hollow and Dean. Duncan sees the band now as pushing harder than before and eventually influencing the music scene in South Africa and one day the global market.
Catlyn McDonald:
The hard hitting, bass abusing, pimp of men! Catlyn was always surrounded by music growing up and was mainly influenced by bands ranging from the black metal of Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir to the metalcore genre of Parkway Drive and other metal such as Arch Enemy. Her passion for playing stemmed from an early age, but she only began her musical carreer in her teenage years by abusing a four string bass. Catlyn found Dean and Duncan while playing at a dodgey bar in Pinetown. Since then she has been a member of The Hollow for the past 5 years and feels that her love for the music and passion for the style she plays drives her to share it on stage with the adrenaline and feeling that is the metal!
Patrick 'Fly' Basson:
Fly is the rhythm guitarist for The Hollow and has been part of the band since early May 2008. He met Dean and Duncan through their old singer Lewis Mclean who jammed with the band in it's earlier incarnations (Human Frequency a softer version of The Hollow). Fly has co-written 4 songs with the band and contributes to the advertising and marketing of The Hollow. He has been playing guitar since he was 13 when he was taught Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' by one of his friends. Since then his major guitar influences have been Bullet for My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Children of Bodom and Cradle of Filth etc. Fly is currently studying a BA (Music) majoring in calssical guitar at UKZN.
The Metal will never die...........
