Probably spent about a day or so on some tunes, so keep that thought in mind when listening to them. My strength, as a songwriter, is my diversity, and how prolific I can be, without the quality o... Q: Ste, do you feel that the current situation with 'free' music and heavily advertised (TV Talent Shows) has stifled the natural progress of musical culture in the UK - if not the world?
A: You've read my mind; this issue is what keeps me awake at night--it's killing originality all over the world, yes! Said talent shows have spread to every country; so-called artists will sell their souls to get on them, and huge audiences lap it all up, oblivious to the superficiality of it all. People want more of the same, regurgitated, formula stuff from artists who, basically, look like, sound like and act like one another. The word 'celebrity', with all that it entails, has become the new opium of the people! This is bad news for the rest of us, with no signs that audiences will evolve in the near future. Unfortunately, most struggling artists still choose to subscribe to this route; thinking in terms of celebrity status, churning out superficial, formula, tunes, and thinking image is more important than content, but a reaction to all this superficiality has to come one day, just as it has in the past, but it's taking a depressingly long time to happen this time. Some artists that are ignored now will acquire cult status far into the future, that is, if they stick with their principles and go for innovation rather than regurgitation. This should occur on the back of a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo--being told what to listen to and what to like by the mercenaries than run every aspect of the media empire--as people look more and more to the past to discover innovative, and thought-provoking, music. I can see you've had quite a career, and lived through those times when music last pushed the boundaries, and know that some of that stuff sounds more relevant now than ever, with bands that were deep underground back then acquiring huge cult status over the years. I think a similar thing will happen for some artists that are neglected now, but years into the future, when growing numbers go searching for the obscure. I don't expect great things for myself; I would see it as some kind of miracle if anything came of what I'm doing, because there is no esc
