Bio
The project began as a solo new wave act, then over the years, with collaborations, the collective had evolved into what it was in 2007 with Shadi Ziaei fronting the band. Currently, both members are working on solo projects and other things, while this project is on hiatus. By no means is it 'done' yet, it is kept alive in concerts when Rus plays some of the tracks solo from this project.
About
There are alot of artists who follow a particular genre, and try to follow current trends. (And these usually end up becoming the "flavour of the month" -those acts that burn brightly for a short while, but also, those that fans quickly become weary of, and usually have a short shelf-life, to ultimately fade into obscurity.) Others may try to be "a little of this, a little of that" and try to please everyone, instead of focusing on a particuar market. (And usually, these end up being nothing at all.) The Fashion Police are one of those rare breed of bands and artists who do just that, staying genre-focused, defining their genre, inventing a sound that is their own, setting their own trends, creating timeless art, forever capturing unforgettable moments, transending time and space. This collective included collaborations from various artists, beginning solo with Rus Stewart, who had founded the project as an experiment in the '80s combining the sounds of New Wave, Trance, House, Alternative, and Ambient music. The resulting Electro/New Wave sort of "Synthpop" -ish sound attracted radio airplay around the world, beginning with college stations. Later, other artists would collaborate, and add their flavours to the sound. Jason Gearin would record a handful of tracks in the mid '90s while simultaneously doing a side-project called "the Dystopia project" -to end up going seperate ways for a decade. From then, till the late '90s, other vocalists tried to fill the need, but none worked out. In 1999, Evelyn Johnson, a model, and also backup singer for artists such as Aretha Franklin, met Mr. Stewart, and they recorded a track in Tom Volinchak's Youngstown studio, with a friend of Rus Stewart, a Christina Moananu, who also did some spoken-word in Samoan on one or two versins of the track. This was short-lived, due to factors beyond everyone's control, Evelyn's husband not wanting her to go back into the record industry, and Tom Volinchak moving to Nashville, and all parties moved onto their own things. In 2006, Jason Gearin decided to record a couple more tracks for the project, this time, in a more New Order/Joy Division sort of vein, and by 2007, some demos were recorded, and both artists again went their own ways. Patrick Gadola, of Dog OK also tried recording with The Fashion Police, but only was able to record a few takes of two tracks, due to time and distance, living quite far from the studio. Late in 2006, Rus contacted Shadi Ziaei, who he had discovered from Future Music Magazine, from her project "Aastiage" -which was featured on the demo cd that came with the UK version of the magazine, back in 2000, and the two decided to work together. This brought us to the sound that The Fashion Police evolved into, but due to issues with distance (Shadi was livng in San Fransisco, moved to Arizona, and Rus was in Ohio) and with Shadi not having a way to record (Shadi had a producer, Cliff Disney) the output was limited to 3 tracks, and ended when Cliff was no longer able to work with the band, and Shadi no longer had a way to record. Rus also collaborated with Scott Romano, a talented guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist around 2007, but Mr. Romano's personal obligations prevented their collaboration to come to pass, beyond a few demos. The project ended in 2008, lasting 20 years, evolving into its full bloom, with their memorable recordings, but ending due to perhaps poor timing within each collaboration attempt, as life's twists and turns would always take the members in different directions. So, we are left with this collective's unforgettable music. Rus Stewart moved on to being a solo artist again, performing and recording the very same music he had been doing, (some of his music overlaps with this project) Shadi is with her own band, "Tomgirl" when she can, she lives in San Fransisco. Jason Gearin has his own band, and Patrick Gadola is with his own band. Nothing is known about Scott Romano, Christina Moananu or Evelyn Johnson at this time, and Cliff Disney operates his own mastering suite, and Tom Volinchak is producing other bands in Memphis. your comments are appreciated, however please keep them relevent to the site, the artist, and the music. any comments that are purely self-promotional or spam will be deleted. also, please direct all reverbnation messages to the artist to the robotique records label page, the email in this page is rarely visited. thank u! should you happen to be a film producer or music director and have found a track that you like, be it found on reverbnation, ilike.com, or myspace, in the event that you are actually going to use the track, and you wish to have a copy on a disc, contact the artist's agent as per licensing details and contract, and request the song from the artist's label to be put on a cd and mailed to you.
Every now and then, an artist comes along who defines their own genre, and invents their own sound, maintaining their own niche.
