About
Liverpool based The Cubical are an intriguing proposition and fate has dealt them a pretty impressive hand.
The band were discovered by acclaimed photographer Jason Reposar who passed their demo onto his friend Jordan Tappis, owner of LA based Record Collection Records. Later that day, whilst skipping through tracks on his car stereo Tappis just happened to be giving a ride to Dave Sardy (infamous producer to the likes of Johnny Cash, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Primal Scream, Jet and Marilyn Manson). By chance The Cubical’s demo came on and the car was filled with whiskey driven blues and Dan Wilson’s distinguishably filthy, soulful vocals. Immediately enamored, Sardy arranged for the band to be flown over to LA for a showcase gig… Fly over they did and after almost blowing the roof off with a scintillating performance at The Echo on Sunset Boulevard Record Collection offered the band an album deal on which Sardy was to take production duties.
Following in the well-trodden footsteps of The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits they recorded the album at Sunset Sound Studios, Hollywood. The album was recorded in 4 intense days with the finishing touches applied by Keith Thompson in Liverpool.
After completing a tour of Australia, successful performances at SXSW and a host of UK shows that included headlining Alan McGee’s Death Disco, The Cubical returned home and were snapped up by pioneering indie label Dead Young Records. Debut album COME SING THESE CRIPPLED TUNES was released early September 2009 in the UK on Dead Young and lapped up by the critics. The record will be out on Record Collection in the USA and Fuse in Australia in the next few months. With the future looking bright we can’t wait to see what fate has in store for them next.
The Cubical are Dan Wilson (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Gavaghan (guitar, piano, vocals), Johnny Green (guitar, harmonica), Percy (drums, vocals) and Craig Bell (bass).
