Come listen and dance to Cuban Son, Brazilian Samba, and African Soukous all in one evening at the North Door Friday, July 11th with music from Son Y No Son and a special reunion of Susanna Sharpe & the Samba Police, and Tamasha Africana. Michael Crockett, host of KUTX-FM radio programs “Horizontes” and “Global Grooves” , aka DJ Canoso, will serve as the MC and DJ between sets. He and guitarist, Russell Scanlon, who plays in all of the aforementioned bands, are celebrating their birthdays along with singer Susana Sharpe and our co-host for this event, WOBEON Festival founder, Jakes Srinivasan. Doors open at 8pm. Cover is $10 8:00 pm DJ CANOSO (aka Michael Crockett) spins Latin & World Music tracks. 9:00 pm – SON Y NO SON Led by singer/conguero/bongocero Rey Arteaga, this band primarily plays “son cubano”, the more acoustic Cuban predecessor to modern day Salsa, but the “no son” in their name may refer to the fact that they also play some Colombian cumbias as well and also to the unique approach they take to both genres using a Mexican “bajo sexto”, played by J.J. Barerra, and an electric guitar played “Congolese rumba-style” by Russell Scanlon. Mary Harsh holds down low end on electric bass. Fronted by singer Susanna Sharpe, this band performs many varieties of “musica popular brasileira” including Bossa Nova, Choro, Forró, Samba Reggae and of course, Samba For many years they played Austin’s annual “Carnaval Brasileiro”. Returning members include Russell Scanlon (guitars), George Oldzie (keyboards), Glenn Schuetz (bass), Sergio Santos (percussion), and Rubens Moura (drums).
