South Street / Press

“South Street is quite familiar with Charleston’s bar scene and has been featured on Balcony TV and Eclectic Evenings through TMI. They are no stranger to throwing a stellar dance party, and everyone in their vicinity knows it. Last Friday, I found them at Boone’s Bar and Grill with the volume cranked up and the room filled with people loving the music. The 5 musicians played a few of their songs before taking a very short set break to rock out for another hour or so. It was easy to see the obvious passion they shared in music and made it hard to believe that this funk/alternative/ jam band started playing together after a fateful meeting in Pita Pit between lead singer Dexter Jenks and rhythm guitarist JR Spencer only a little over a year ago. With influences from Phish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, and Sublime, South Street is unique due to the diverse backgrounds of the band members and the way they switch from performing at house parties to bars and larger venues with ease.”

“With their high energy, and alternative funk rock style, South Street has a sound influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, jam bands, reggae and punk. South Street is made up of a bunch of rambunctious goons who share an undying love for music and Hardee's....word.”

“South Street knows how to get down. Their music resonates with music-lovers of all ages, but it truly hits home with the college-aged demographic. People are drawn to South Street’s catchy lyrics and high-energy beats–the band as a whole is definitely magnetic. Dexter Jenks’s way with the microphone and dance skills keep the dancing at it’s finest as Brian Hutchinson and JR Spencer kill it on the guitar. But that’s not all. Whether you like it or not, no kind of party-starting jam session is possible without the bass brought to you by John Barry or the drums a la Sam Roberts. After seeing South Street a few times, I’ve gathered that even though Sam’s keeps it cool, calm, and collected, his..ahem, nasty… drum skills are on another level. I can dig it. This rock, reggae, funk, and self-dubbed ‘jamalicious’ band doesn’t play games…well, they do sometimes–they like to have fun everyday–but their music is no joke.”

“South Street is comprised of five CofC students. They are all extremely talented in their abilities and have been becoming more and more popular amongst Charleston’s students and music enthusiast. With every show they play, one can physically hear their sound maturing. The bass is downright funky, the drums have epic feel changes that never miss a beat, the guitar riffs and rhythms will pull your girlfriends clothes off, and the vocals put Homer’s sirens to shame.”

“Dexter Jenks, Brian Hutchinson, JR Spencer, John Barry, and Sam Roberts, had the house absolutely packed! The living room of this 150 year old Chuck Town house was transformed into a stage as well as a dance floor. As the party starting winding down and the group began unplugging their equipment, I got a chance to talk with lead vocalist, Dexter and bassist, John. Turns out they recently opened for Passafire at Charleston’s Music Farm. I asked John what is it like to be able to open for a well known band in an nearly sold out venue and then less than a week later be playing for packed house party. He simply responded, ”That is the beauty of being in a band in a place like Charleston, or any college town. You have a chance to get your name out via parties, which in turn can lead to more serious opportunities. It great to be able to do both!” He handed me a copy of their latest album, 66, and I thought such locally grown music should be sent to the ears of all our fellow spacers”
