More About The Artist
There would be something of the hoodoo about how Son Of Dave, after more than 22 years in the music business, the last six touring relentlessly, could capture the attention of the coolest of music tastemakers. But a rule-breaking approach to music, endlessly quotable dialogue, a great album and hypnotic live show would do just as well.
Son Of Dave, aka Benjamin Darvill, brought “the Blues kicking and howling into the 21st Century” with his 2006 album release ‘02’ and championed by the likes of Dazed & Confused, Vice and Clash, he performed on BBC 2’s flagship music show ‘Later With Jools Holland’, supported Supergrass on their last UK tour, inspired KT Tunstall’s solo show and Grace Jones asked for his phone number.
On April 7th 2008, Son Of Dave follows that classic with another, ‘03’, out on Kartel. If ‘02’ provided a diamond-in-the-rough appeal, his sounds has expanded for ‘03’, adding guitar, piano, organ, a plucked cello and backing vocals to the staple looping harmonica, beat-box and foot stomp. With the songs themed around women, drinking, fighting and the dangers of crass consumerism for the working man, ‘03’ also features a cover of War’s classic ‘Low Rider’. ‘03’ sees the return of Alex McGowan (The Future Sound Of Music, Tricky, Josh Homme) on co-production duties alongside Benjamin as well as producer duo Bacon & Quarmby (Richard Hawley, King Creosote, Finlay Quaye). Artwork for the album was created by Le Gun illustrator Chris Bianchi, an action shot of our 21st Century blues hero.
