It has been a long road for this bluesman born as Clarence Edward Smith in Smithfield, who started out as a teenager playing guitar alongside some of the Texas giants and stints playing bass behind Freddie King and Albert Collins. He moved to California in the late 50’s where he was befriended by the legendary L.C. "Good Rockin'" Robinson who influenced his decision to take up the lap steel guitar. “ Texas-born “triple threat” bluesman (guitar, lap steel, singer-songwriter) Sonny Rhodes is one such true-blooded originator who has earned his place in the history of blues music.
Certainly, if his recording of over 200 songs, endless touring throughout Europe and North America, and numerous awards and nominations (including the W.C. Handy Award) aren’t enough evidence of Rhodes’ contribution to music, then perhaps the second annual Smithville Music Festival, held November 6, 2010, in Rhodes’ hometown of Smithville, TX, is: the Governor of Texas and the Mayor of Smithville presented Rhodes with a plaque of recognition and a key to the city, and the legendary Jimmie Vaughan beckoned attendees of the ceremony to give it up to a real blues legend by calling Rhodes to the stage.
