Calling all Vocalists! I'm looking forward to being in Sitka, Alaska this summer during the week of July 20 - 27 for the inaugural Dee Daniels Vocal Jazz Workshop at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Joining me in the presentation of the workshop will be New York vocalist, composer, arranger, recording artist, and educator, Charenee Wade. In 2010, Charenee was the first runner-up of the prestigious Thelonius Monk International Vocal Competition. She performs internationally and is currently the jazz vocal professor at the Aaron Copeland School of Music at City University in New York, and Queens College in Queens, NY.
Here is an idea of what you can expect from the summer's vocal workshop. Our intention is to create a supportive environment where the main focus will be singing as a soloist in a small group setting. Each day there will be four sessions conducted by Charenee and myself. In addition to technique, we will cover aspects of what it takes to become the consummate soloist, including personal grounding techniques / meditation / how to create with focused energy; melodic & rhythmic exploration; listening: comparing vocal styles; transposition & arranging / refining repertoire; the art of storytelling; phrasing; choosing repertoire; the art of creating scat; performance presentation (developing stage presence, microphone technique, creating a set list, body language, band interaction); a music business crash course, and more. We'll have a world class trio of accompanists: Christian Fabian (bass), Ed Littlefield (bass), and Reuel Lubag (piano). You'll have plenty of opportunity to sing, sing, sing during both rehearsals and informal jamming!
To kick off the workshop, on Sunday evening, July 21st, you'll have an opportunity to attend a public concert featuring myself, Charenee, and the trio, Christian, Ed, and Reuel. At the end of the workshop on the Thursday evening, YOU will perform in a public concert – an opportunity to put what you've learned during the week into practice. Your performance will be video-taped. On Friday (the last day of the workshop), your video will be reviewed and critiqued by Charenee and I with the goal of giving you constructive support and suggestions for raising the bar of your performances.
I hope you'll come join Charenee and I to create great music.
