Gerry Tenney & the Hard Times Orchestra
with World Blues Trio
Tuesday, May 01, 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm)
International Worker's Day celebration with bay area mandolin stalwart and his band -
$16.50 advance / $18.50 at door
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, mandolinist, and longtime stalwart of the Bay Area music scene, Gerry Tenney honors International Worker's Day with an evening of musical commentary on economic downturns and labor struggles. Gerry and his Hard Times Orchestra stitch together songs from Pete Seeger and the New Lost City Ramblers with related traditional and contemporary material, including a wide spectrum of blues, klezmer, bluegrass, rock and roll, and many of Gerry's own songs. Gerry is joined by special guests including the World Blues Trio, and others tba.
Longtime leader of one of the West Coasts's leading klezmer bands, California Klezmer, Gerry also heads the bluegrass/americana band The Lost Tribe. The Hard Times Orchestra backs him tonight.
World Blues Trio features Trinidadian vocalist NezB, kora player Keenan Webster, & guitarist Gary Nelson. WBT will be playing progressive acoustic songs written by Deborah Barer, Ernesto Browne, & Gary Nelson, . The kora is a 21 string West African gourd harp.
Sharon Bernstein, Francesco Spagnolo, and Ariel Spagnolo will join the Hard Times Orchestra to sing Italian partisan and Yiddish songs. The concert will honor Hester Lox, long time Bay Area partisan of traditional music and progressive causes, and a Freight volunteer, who passed away recently. It will also benefit Katja Samati’s 4th grade class trip from Sobrante Park Elementary School in East Oakland. Katja will be taking her students, many of whom have never seen the ocean, to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
