Rapper Al Nuke Calls Upon City for Peace:
A Rally to Heal Detroit
In the wake of recent murders such as 7 year old Ayanna Jones and the violence and corruption that has plagued Detroit over the years, Detroit has finally risen to the cause of PEACE
Detroit, MI, May 26, 2010: Al Nuke, a Detroit rapper and community activist, along with Big Herk, Trick Trick, Seven The General, Yusef Shakur, Lodge Boyz, Custom Whips, Good Fella Clothing, Stretch Money, DJ Fingers and TJ Detroit Streets of FM 98 WJLB, Ruff Riders Bike Club, Ron Scott (CAPB), Tony Stovall of Hot Sam’s Clothing, Leg Work INC, and many others have come together for the free HEAL DETROIT RALLY scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 12 Noon. The plan is to convene in two distinct locations on 7 Mile Road, the Westside starting at Greenfield and the Eastside starting at Van Dyke. Marchers will assemble at 7 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue for a peace rally at 3 P.M, free with live musical performances and activities for the children to raise the awareness of love and peace in Detroit.
Event organizer, LaKeisha Harris, and numerous volunteers have organized their efforts to spread the word on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace. The Detroit Police have pledged their support with crowd control and others have donated water for the marchers. In addition, participants have delved into a grassroots effort by passing out sign up sheets to allow citizens and people who love the City of Detroit to pledge to march, participate in the rally or garner their support. Street teams have passed out flyers around the city to create a street buzz to make this first annual event the huge success story it is predicted to become.
About Al Nuke
For Al Nuke, life has been defined by the HUSTLE. Imagine being homeless at 13 living in cars and 24hr restaurants, or bathing in your friend’s sink when their parents are at work.
Such was the tumultuous childhood of Curtis Franklin a/k/a Al Nuke. Growing up on the streets of Detroit, Al Nuke has proven that through determination, true perseverance, the impossible becomes possible.
In 1997 Nuke found himself locked up facing 16 years for attempted murder. While incarcerated, God came to Nuke in a dream and displayed to him all his faults and failures. At that moment Al Nuke made a promise to fully commit himself into his lifelong dream: music.
Since those early days, community organizers, city officials, and activists have recognized Al Nuke’s efforts by supporting him in his endeavors to reach out to the heart of the ‘hood, a demographic many deem too often as overlooked.
Al Nuke takes pride in working with the community, forming Operation Hip Hop, a non-profit organization that tours annually throughout the schools, encouraging teens to follow their dreams and be responsible for self and most importantly, to believe in GOD. He also works closely every year with campaigns like FM98 WJLB’s “Coats 4 Kids” and Hot 102.7FM’s “Shoes for Shorties” not only donating time, but also money. “I came from those types of broken homes; that’s why every year I make it my duty to have school supply drives and food drives for homeless shelters. These are things I take the initiative to do if nobody else does,” says Nuke.
With the incentive to bridge the gaps and peacefully rally the East and West sides of Detroit, all can take pride in their city and get back to the basics of taking care of the community, especially the youth. Speakers, performers and special informational booths will be the motivational start because the time is now. In 2009, with 379 homicides, 1,220 violent crimes committed per 100,000 people and the lack of jobs and opportunities, crime rates skyrocket. No one can deny Detroit is plagued with pain.
DETROIT has spoken and we are ready to stand up to save our city. HEAL DETROIT.
June 12. MARCH OR DIE.
