Imported & Domestic Brazilian Music in Salem
On Thursday 4 June, two groups of virtuoso musicians will bring Brazilian music to Christo’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Salem: Choro das 3 and The Tom Bergeron Brasil Band. The two bands will play separately and together, sharing both the stage and their distinctive approaches to the historic and contemporary genre known as “choro” — the Brazilian equivalent of jazz crossbred with urban bluegrass.
The São Paulo-based band Choro das 3 comprises three sisters and their father — who collectively have amazed and delighted audiences throughout Brazil, Europe and North America since they began to play professionally in 2003. This will be their third US tour and their second appearance at Christo’s.
The sisters are Corina on flute and piccolo; Lia on the Brazilian 7-string acoustic guitar; and Elisa on mandolin, banjo, clarinet, and piano. Eduardo, their father, plays pandeiro — which resembles a tambourine but sounds more like a one-man percussion section.
Of the group, world-renowned mandolinist Mike Marshall has said that Choro das 3 plays, ". . . some of the most inspired and inspiring music . . . the highest level of musicianship and presentation . . . the highest quality of Brazilian Choro music that can be heard any place today.” Madeleine Mair says: “The group ‘Choro das 3’ is a truly extraordinary example of traditional choro performance practice, and the four performers are all virtuosos on their instruments. . . . Their recordings and expertise have established them worldwide as important advocates for this musical style.”
Also on the bill will be the Tom Bergeron Brasil Band. Tom, a professor of music at Western Oregon University, has been deeply involved with Brazilian music for over a decade, returning annually to study and perform, and leading a student group at WOU in addition to his own band. His Brasil Band plays plays an eclectic mix of Brazilian genres, including choro, samba, bossa nova, MPB, frevo, and Brazilian jazz.
As always, the band will feature the singing of Rosimery Bergeron, who was immersed from an early age in the musical culture of her native Rio de Janeiro, participating in Rio’s legendary samba schools, studying voice, and developing a deep repertoire of samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian Popular Music (MPB).
Also with the band as usual will be groove-master Page Hundemer on bass. Filling out the band will be two new members who will be making their first Christo’s appearance: Sergio Botelho, a virtuoso guitarist from Volta Redonda, Brazil, now living in Portland; and Cameron Siegal, Portland’s most exciting young drummer.
