Hiromi creates an instantly recognizable style with a dense flurry of notes and chords that recalls Art Tatum and her mentor, Ahmad Jamal. Hiromi’s vision of jazz is unique without being willfully strange, and her solo performances draw inspiration from sources as diverse as Bach, Oscar Peterson, Franz Liszt, and Sly and the Family Stone. With a distinctly postmodern sensibility that gleefully juxtaposes wildly disparate musical elements and infuses them with a joyful spirit, Hiromi’s playing “flows like water and demonstrates classical chops harnessed to a fierce energy” (Philadelphia Inquirer).
