About This Month's Featured Artist Teporah:
Teporah started playing piano at the ripe young age of 4. It's been a love affair since. An award winning national BMI composer from the age of 10 years old, Teporah studied composition, trumpet, piano, and music theory at Peabody, and attended the Oberlin Conservatory. A minor in ethno-musicology lends world music influences such as African drumming, Indonesian Gamelan and vocal styling to her music, as well as the classical touch of Debussy, Eric Satie, and modern composers such as Phillip Glass.
As if this weren't enough of a concoction, Teporah comes from a musical family that regurgitated jazz and blues ( her grandfather's influence) as well as folk. Her mother who was a classical musician, also played guitar, and sang spirituals and resistance songs during the 60s, so the social issues of that turbulent time are a running theme through Teporah's songs.
Teporah is deeply involved in the Baltimore Songwriter's Association, and hosts monthly music showcases and concerts. She has honed her craft over the years to write compelling, well-thought out songs that tug on the heart strings. From fun, bluesy tunes to delicate cabaret ballads, Teporah's style and emotional palette is very broad yet always intimately connected to her listeners.
With two full-length CDs under her belt; Threads, a solo CD, and Bar Tunes, a Blues and Soul collection, Teporah is ready to launch a third CD, comprising of her more delicate, and deeply emotional works.
