“Originally formed in 2006 as a 3 piece around vocalist/lyricist Milyn Satterfield, they’ve now expanded to a 14 piece band with a woodwind & brass section, keys, strings & turntables. That’s evolution at double speed. Their Southern roots are reflected in the chilled, lazy grooves in which they frame Milyn’s words & distinctive sound. Influenced by hiphop, blues, Southern rock & San Francisco psychedelia, Milyn’s original voice, & her band, a loose-limbed organism, move & shape themselves to suit. Perhaps they’re just part of a wave of Alabama bands, but I’ve not heard anything quite like them. Their mix of big band aesthetics & languid, toasted vibe is seriously appealing, & the standout tracks manage to find a link between the boho smarts of Rickie Lee Jones & old-school rap crews like Arrested Development.
