“Jazz breaking news: John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme re-envisioned for the Summer Solstice Flautist Rowland Sutherland’s inspired vision... Sutherland’s newly composed parts merged seamlessly with Coltrane’s four part work, introducing contemporary soundscapes and ascending lines that gave the flute, sax and bass clarinet top lines ample space to articulate the themes and develop soaring harmonies from this remarkable sound palette, proving just how missed Williamson and Sutherland have been from the contemporary scene. … the audience rapidly found themselves in the presence of a very special, deeply spiritual performance.”

Rowland’s quartet is a new dynamic group of highly respected musicians merging to create something transcendental, colourful, expansive, otherworldly and deep. Music that is both driven and inventive with the occasional subterraneous excursion. Evocative, worldly explorations of free improvisation, jazz and groove sounds with added inspirations from the Caribbean and India. Ethereal themes converge with hypnotic rhythms, celestial textures, raw shifting ostinatos, psychedelic dub waves, colliding counterpoints and layers of sostenuto. A rich blend of elements from this vibrant quartet that promises music-making that challenges as well as soothes the listener. Tonight’s performance will mark the quartet’s debut concert. Rowland Sutherland is widely regarded as being one of the most versatile flautists in the UK. He can regularly be seen performing with some of the finest jazz bands, improvised music groups, new music ensembles, symphony orchestras, non-Western groups, pop outfits, and as a soloist, throughout Europe and further afield. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Centre, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Chatelet Les Halles and Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall. Sutherland is also active as a composer and his recent composition Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme) has received a lot of praise following sold out performances of the work at James Lavelle’s Meltdown 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, where it received standing ovations. Ansuman Biswas has worked as a composer, percussionist and creative artist in a wide range of contexts from jazz to Indian Classical music, pop songs to industrial noise. He has been commissioned by the Sonic Arts Network, the National Theatre, the Royal Ballet, the English National Opera and Guangdong Modern Dance Company in China as well as numerous other ensembles, film makers, theatre and dance companies. He has worked with the BBC, Channel Four, MTV, the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and with Bjork, Courtney Pine, The Specials, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney, Oasis and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The piano and electronics artist Pat Thomas is one half of Black Top with Orphy Robinson. He has performed with Derek Bailey, was a member of the Tony Oxley Quartet, played in Oxley’s Angular Apron along with Larry Stabbins, Manfred Schoof and Sirone and played with Lol Coxhill. He plays with Mike Cooper’s Continental Drift, a duo with percussionist Mark Sanders and a trio with Steve Beresford and Francine Luce. In 1992 Pat Thomas formed the quartet Scatter with Phil Minton, Roger Turner and Dave Tucker. Pat Thomas has performed with Jim O’Rourke, Mats Gustafsson and Alexander Frangenheim in The Hague, Fred Frith, Shelly Hirsch, Carlos Zingaro in Stuttgart and Evan Parker, Phil Minton, John Russell and Roger Turner in Budapest. Guillaume Viltard has performed on bass with a wide host of notable improvised music soloists including Sharon Gall, Moshi Honen, Gail Brand, Ute Kanngiesser, Paul Abbott, Tony Marsh, Shabaka Hutchings, John Russell, Phil Minton, Soizic Lebrat, John Butcher, Eddie Prevost and Isabelle Duthoit among many others.

InSoundOut: Handsley/Sutherland/Watanabe The Trio brings together three esteemed performers and distinct voices on the jazz and improv scene together as one entity: Tori Handsley (electric harp), Rowland Sutherland (flutes), Emi Watanabe (traditional Japanese flutes). Combining hypnotic bass lines and melodies, erupting into free ethereal passages and unknown places. The trio merges harp and flute in a new dynamic way, contrary to one might initially expect from this combination of instruments. The trio has performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the Meltdown festival 2014. www.torishands.com Tori Handsley started playing the piano at the age of 3 and the harp at the age of 6. Originally classically trained, she grew up listening to the music of Miles Davis, Bird, Dizzy, Keith Jarrett and many more, and was drawn to the freedom of jazz and improvisation. One of the highlights of her career was touring with her childhood hero Nigel Kennedy in 2010, after being invited to be a part of his band for his Duke Ellington tour. Tori has since performed with other notable artists including: Orphy Robinson, Cleveland Watkiss, Pat Thomas, Claude Deppa, Shabaka Hutchings, Doug Boyle & Adam Waldmann and more. Rowland Sutherland enjoys an international career in many dif- ferent fields of music. He regularly performs and guests in new music ensembles, jazz bands, improvised music groups, symphony orchestras, various non-Western groups, pop outfits and as a soloist. Many of Rowland’s solo con- temporary flute performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio. He has composed and arranged music for bands, ensembles and the BBC.Jazz, Improv and World Music artists Rowland has performed with include such international artists as Frank Wess, David Murray, Flora Purim, Henry Threadgil, Carla Bley, Manu Dibango, Airto, Joyce, Evan Parker and many more. Emi Watanabe was born in Japan where she trained in traditional flutes. Emi plays three different types of flutes - Ryuteki, Nohkan and Shinobue. She has been invited to play with numerous different musicians since she moved to the UK in 1995, these include from traditional settings to maverick performers such as Jah Wobble. - See more at: http://www.servantjazzquarters.com/event/egf-london-jazz-festival-insoundout-present-handsleysutherlandwatanabe-julie-kj-r-quartet#sthash.JMKQHXpZ.dpuf

AGMP in association with Straight no Chaser presents John Coltrane's masterpiece A Love Supreme, re-envisioned in a complete live performance at the Union Chapel, London. Featuring master flautist and composer Rowland Sutherland’s radiant score Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane). Taking place on 9 December 2014 to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the recording of this iconic spiritual masterpiece. The original album was recorded at the Van Gelder Studios in one session on 9up December 1964. Following on from two sold-out performances and standing ovations in the QEH at James Lavelle’s Meltdown ‘Enlightenment’ — a bold re-envisioning of John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’ — is to be performed by a stellar 15 piece ensemble of some of Europe’s finest musicians in jazz, improvised and non-Western music, with the superb vibraphonist Orphy Robinson, of Jazz Warriors International, as MD. The concert will be presented by the curator Paul Bradshaw of Chaser Productions. The line-up: Steve Williamson, Ade Egun Crispin Robinson, Nikki Yeoh, Ansuman Biswas, Shabaka Hutchings, Rowland Sutherland, Orphy Robinson, Pat Thomas, Tunde Jegede, Cleveland Watkis, Juwon Ogungbe, Dave Pattman, Oli Savill, Neil Charles and Mark Mondesir. Rowland Sutherland's score ‘Enlightenment [In the Spirit of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane]’ was commissioned by Chaser Productions and funded by PRS for Music Foundation in 2012. FT - Mike Hobart - 23 June 2014 4 Stars ‘This “re-envisioning”, scored by flautist Rowland Sutherland and performed as part of this year’s Meltdown festival, maintained the arc of the original with a meditational beginning, an intense and increasingly raw middle and a final devotion at the end.’ ‘Sutherland’s score is an imaginative and detailed addition to the Love Supreme legacy that adds contemporary context to the religious underpinning of Coltrane’s heritage…’ ‘It deserves to be heard again.’ The Guardian - John Fordham - 23 June 2014 ‘some searingly exciting jazz…’ ‘Rowland Sutherland's 're-envisioning' of the classic album produced a remarkable gig with notable performances…’ www.flutefocus.com - Sarah Chaplin - 2 July 2014 ‘A Love Supreme… it is a piece that reminds us whatever genre or era, truly original music has a uniquely transcendental and empowering energy, something which British flautist and composer Rowland Sutherland's re-envisioned suite conveys in all its ambitious multi-ethnic splendour.’ ‘There have been other artists and composers who have probed the core of Coltrane's masterwork, but few have been able to bring to it the subtlety and humility that Sutherland uses to undertake this task.’ ‘it was quite an experience…’
