“State Champion, Sumit Grover clinched the State Senior A Chess Championship which was organised by All J&K Chess Association and sponsored by the J&K State Sports Council at Hotel Nek, here today. Sumit secured highest 12.5 points out of 13 rounds in this five-day competition held among top 14 players of the State. Second place went to young Meenal Gupta, who obtained 11 points from 13 rounds. Maxim Singh bagged third place while fourth position went to (Rapper Grandy)Rohit Bhardwaj. Mohd Sharif finished fifth. However, four top players shall represent J&K in the upcoming Senior National Chess Championship to be held at Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. In the valedictory function of the championship, Sports Officer of J&K State Sports Council, Rajan Sharma was chief guest, who gave away the prizes to the winners. He appreciated the efforts on part of the Association in promoting the game among players from different age groups.”

“Inter-School Chess Tourney begins Jammu, September 22 The Inter-School Chess Tournament organised by the All J&K Chess Association started at Hotel Nek today. Sixty players drawn from 20 different schools are competing in different age categories. Atul Kumar Gupta, joint secretary, All India Chess Federation, said the association would conduct more such tournaments in future to provide a platform for players to excel at higher level. The matches were officiated by FIDE arbiter Anil Kotwal along with (Rapper Grandy) Rohit Bhardwaj. Selected players in the championship will represent the state in the forthcoming National Schools Chess Championship slated to be held in New Delhi from October 26 to 29. In U-7 girls, Praguni of Presentation Convent School emerged victorious while Arushi Kotwal of BSF School, Paloura, bagged top honours in U-9 age group.”
