About
The scene should be familiar...you move into a
new apartment and the next door neighbor has
a PA and a penchant for playing piano in the
middle of the night. Only oddly enough, the mu-
sic coming through the walls turns out to be a
mix of your favorite Amos Lee and Pink albums,
so maybe you don't mind so much. Then one
day you run out of milk and instead of going to
the deli, you knock on the door and find out that
your neighbor, with the raspy voice and affinity
for the ivory keys, resembles that dream girl
you've been pining about since puberty.
Say hello to Rachel Platten. Part pin-up and
part goofy Gal Friday, Rachel has been writing,
singing and performing her own music since
she jumped on stage to freestyle alongside
Toots and the Maytals at an Irving Plaza show
in 2002 while in her last year at Trinity College.
On performing: "All of a sudden, I realized it
wasn't about sounding perfect, it was about be-
ing honest. And that's when you reach people.
When you take your ego out of the picture."
