Q: What was the personal connection/ inspiration behind "Mark of Cain"?

A: Hi!! The story behind Mark of Cain is a good one! I wrote that song when I was driving from Atlanta, GA to Lexington, KY to play Woodsongs Oldtime Radio Hour... I was supposed to have 3 songs that we're 3 1/2 minutes or less and, at that time, all my current songs were like Alice's Restaurant and I was sweating it. I had about a 4 hour drive ahead of me so I decided to take that time to craft a short song I could play on the show! I couldn't write anything down or play anything because I was driving so I thought a good thing to do was write a spiritual type tune that could be sung A'capella while I was writing it... Just as I was searching my brain for a subject I past 3 HUGE crosses on the side of I-75 and for some reason my brain went immediately to the story of Cain and Abel... It was like memory lightening. And of all the bible stories I learned from my grandmother, this one always stuck with me because it scared the crap outta me... I could remember the gist of the story, but I needed some more details so I called home and had my dad read me the story from the bible while I was driving through Kentucky. (He was slightly alarmed when I called him from the road asking him to read me the bible until I explained.) I pretty much took what he read me and turned it straight into verses... When I arrived in Lexington, I eorked up the song with my guitar player , Brett Hartenbach and we played it that night on the show!
