Bio

About

As a quintet, Guatemala’s Primmo have taken their 2008 debut CD, Project Jive, to success in their home country. But not without a little help from the groups’ unofficial sixth member and logo, the Monkey. The animal represents the theory of evolution, much in the way that the band has taken music back to its roots with their “urban music mixture.”

The Monkey sparked an unintentional controversy when stencils adorned with the animals’ image were plastered around town by fans up to a little monkey business.

“That created a lot of commotion and a lot of resistance towards us,” reveals founder/guitarist/ vocalist Gian Paolo Perini. “Some people still tell us today, ‘You guys are vandals but the music’s tight.’”

Primmo, comprised of Perini, lead guitarist Andres Ponciano, bassist Luis Pedro Gonzales, drummer Alejandro Calderon and sax player Rosse Aguilar, came together in August 2008 to create a sound that would push musical boundaries.

Perini and Calderon have a five-year history together while Aguilar, Gonzales, an ex-member of a cover band, and Ponciano, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, are recent recruits. With chemistry, drive and passion intact the band wanted to “experiment and always do something that’s creative and different from what’s going out of Guatemala to the world,” says Perini.

Project Jive was released on their own imprint, UO Productions, (Unorthodox Productions), and became the biggest independent record in Guatemala.

“We do our own thing and we don’t depend on anybody,” says Perini of Primmo’s success. “We are very aggressive and we speak our mind. You have to make noise, you have to be different.”

Primmo want to create impact on a worldwide scale.

“We don’t look at it in Guatemala, we look at it as more of a global consciousness,” explains Perini. “We think that we’re living in a very important stage in history and what we try to do in our music career is talk about consciousness itself. What we try to do is tell people that it’s okay to change and evolve.”. - Terri-Lynne Waldron
