The evening, part of Alberta Culture Days, will involve a series of duos pairing electronic artists with acoustic musicians, many with international credentials. Artists will include San Diego flutist Marion Garver Fredrickson in her first Edmonton stage appearance since the BEAMS Sea of Sound Festival in 2005, and Shawn Pinchbeck who will perform for the first time since successfully defending his doctorate thesis earlier this year at the University of Birmingham, UK. Also on the bill will be Pocket Uni verse, who released their latest CD, Torment, in 2012, and performance art-oriented act agaperaygun experiment. Rounding out the bill will be Don Ross, Wayne DeFehr and Gene Kosowan. Admission is $10 ($5 to BEAMS and Harcourt House members). 4TH ANNUAL RUBABOO ARTS FESTIVAL JUNE 7-17th 2012 “Rubaboo” is a Michif (Métis) word for a stew that’s full of life, with food that feeds the spirit. The Rubaboo Arts Festival with its multi-disciplinary, contemporary and traditional Aboriginal arts festival. We offer all Aboriginal artists a platform with which to present their work. Our Goal is to nurture and cultivate an Aboriginal arts scene in Edmonton that enriches our collective identity. We produce events that bring artists of multiple disciplines and Aboriginal traditions together. We encourage and inspire collaborations in both contemporary and traditional styles and present these creations to diverse audiences both locally and abroad. Alberta Aboriginal Arts provides audiences of all backgrounds a chance to experience challenging works from an unique Aboriginal PERSPECTIVE. BEAMS presents The Saturn Sessions Five adventurous music-oriented artists will be pitting their talents against one of the solar system’s largest celestial bodies in a combined concert and layered recording session. Presented by the Boreal Electroacoustic Music Society, The Saturn Sessions takes place Saturday, May 19 at 8 p.m. at the Ortona Armoury (9733-102 Street). Admission to the all-ages, licensed event is $5. Slated to perform with a bedtrack consisting of radio signals emitting from the planet Saturn, recorded in 1981 from detectors on board NASA’s Voyager 2 probe, are the following: • Moonfyre (spoken word), one-half of electropop duo Pocket Universe • Will Truchon (digital delay processing), former artistic director of The Works Art and Design Festival • Bill Damur (flute), music instructor and performer with acts including Mobius and Tsunami Brothers • Don Ross (clarinet), music instructor and frontman of the acclaimed St. Crispin Chamber Ensemble • Stanis Coleslaw R.E.M. (electronics) performance artist at large The 10-minute Saturn soundtrack will be the nucleus of the event, with each artist adding their own live overdub during their scheduled set. By the end of the evening, it is anticipated that the results will include a multi-track archive of the concert and session. Patrons are encouraged to bring along a blank CD or a USB flash drive. Pending the outcome of the concert and sessions, a recording of the evening should become available at the end of the show.
