“Having performed at a number of music venues and nightclubs nationwide, NEM has also performed alongside a number of renowned artists such as Example, Chipmunk, Lethal Bizzle, Wiley, Skinnyman, Bashy, Akala and Tinchy Stryder. His recent releases have seen him opt for a more commercial sounding approach to his music and according to his myspace “has been moderately influenced by both electro and indie music, while maintaining its urban roots”. Think Professor Green crossed with Calvin Harris and you’re pretty much there.”
“Take Off, featuring Vex One, isn’t the first time that the two artists have collaborated. This works in the song’s favour; the working relationship seems to be a good one and both NEM and Vex One appear to contribute equally, bouncing off each other in order to create a catchy, rhythmic single that uses the build-and-release method found so often in club music – starting off slow but climbing towards a heavy rhythm. It’s easy to imagine it being played at a club, the song effortlessly creating that kind of atmosphere and emphasising the dance beats.”
“Although not their first collaborate effort, "Take Off' is Nem & Vex One's most commercial to date, and is angling for a spot in the metaphorical vinyl case of many a club DJ this summer. Essentially solo artists, both have performed on the same stage as the likes of Chipmunk, Example, Wiley, Reverend & The Makers, Lethal Bizzle and more.”
“I’m telling a story. I’ve always been known for that, a lot of rappers will use punch lines and brag. I don’t tend to brag a lot, sometimes you do but it’s not what I want to do.”
“NEM is something that I would definitely stick on my Ipod. ... His single "I see her, "is what I've been given to judge him upon. As a first impression, I'd recommend him ...”
“ROTHERHAM rapper J Yezza and Sheffield boy Nem are working hard to make their mark on the music industry. The lads have joined forces to build up Drunken Boy Records—an independent music label supporting local artists—and have found that they are gaining a massive fan base for their unique electro and hip hop style. The boys, who started working together in 2006, have made a name for themselves by performing alongside various artists, which has included The Kaiser Chiefs, Reverend And The Makers, Lethal Bizzle and Chipmunk. Reporter CHERRY WILSON caught up with the lads who were supporting Tinchy Stryder at Onyx Rooms in Rotherham to get an intimate insight into the Drunken Boy movement.”
“Nem and J Yezza—from independent music label Drunken Boy Records—have teamed up with singer Imogen Blue and production master DJ Kucia to form a new group, 4th Bass. The group spent an entire day in Rotherham shooting the music video for their debut single Lights Out, which will be unleashed on the commercial music scene later this year. Reporter CHERRY WILSON caught up with Nem and J Yezza on the set in Mazeppa bar to find out why Rotherham will be the backdrop for their debut single.”
“FOLLOWING last week's guest spot on the new series of Shooting Stars this canny lad is on the road promoting his new single Tracy. Thanks to the success of Stay With Me and So Nice, the 21-year-old better known to his mum as James Charters is rapidly ascending the same heights as Tinchy Stryder with his blend of R&B, grime, pop and hip hop. Watch out for support from local ba ADVERTISEMENT nd 4th Bass, who are set to release their single Lights Out soon with a video recorded in hometown club/bar Mazeppa. "It looks a lot higher budget than it was," admits Ben Wheeler aka Nem who formed the band together with singer Imogen Blue, fellow local MC J Yezza and producer DJ Kucia to create a more commercial sound than their underground solo exploits. 4th Bass also open for Tinchy Stryder and Chipmunk at Sheffield's O2 Academy on October 8 and entertain Sheffield Steelers fans at the Arena this Saturday. Keep an eye out for that video on YouTube.”
“The open-mindedness on The Centre Stage marks out NEM as a ground-breaking artist: not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, or sample a 90s indie hit, he's provided Sheffield with a home-grown talent that looks behind the grime of the steel city – whilst still providing a grime-influenced soundtrack to Sheffield's vibrant nightlife.”
“Nem Interview with Sheffield Music Scene about The Centre Stage”
“Hot on the heals of the most recent successful acts to come out of UK Hip Hop, such as Wiley and Lethal Bizzal, upcoming Hip Hop artist Nem, AKA Ben Wheeler, tells us that he doesn't like to blend in as he was made to stand out from the crowd. But in his attempt to differentiate himself from anyone else, Nem has only regurgitated the same old sound. A little bit two dimensional, I found that Nem's music lacked a depth that he thinks can be made up through the use of his more unusual voice. On my second listen to Nem's track 'Make a move' in which he appears to discover some lovely ladies on a night out, I recognise a familiar line: 'All the weekend rockstars are in the toilets, practising their lines' - debunking the old adage that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
