I learned it from an English folksinger in Montreal, Quebec back in 1964, even though it became popular as a Carter family song...it's sung all along the Eastern seaboard. thanks for your kind words. I'm enjoying your music too...my husband Po Cholly is a trad blues singer & both my parents had a long history with New Orleans jazz.
Thanks! It's a traditional Canadian song & at this point, most folks learn it in school...very different from when I went & we were taught very few Canadian songs...a few from Quebec & the maritimes
