Kind words from Bernie Doucette

THANK-YOU: I want to thank Mr. John Murphy of Simple productions for his help and direction on my new Album “Alberta Dust, Stories From The Small White.” I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best in my Career: CBC Cape Breton, Bob Quinn (Anne Murray’s Producer), Dennis Field (Award winning Engineer and many time JUNO judge), Ian Mc Laws (Sound Tech/Engineer for George Thorogood, Heart, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton and a brilliant Musician Singer/Songwriter in his own right) to name a few. I have been extremely fortunate that people have given their time and effort to help me with my music and to that all I can say is a heart-felt and humble Thank-You. However, working with John Murphy has been an incredible and totally unique experience. When a person has been making music as long as I have you tend to think you know what you are doing in the Studio, and in most respects this is true, but working with John I have had the opportunity to learn again. John has impeccable musical skills in Engineering and Production which comes from his formal education and Music Degree. However, it’s Johns amazing instincts for music that has made “Alberta Dust” the best work I have ever done. The freedom and creativity that comes with working with someone like John is something you would have to experience to really understand, but I think it can be compared to a story I read about Phil Spector, the Genius behind Mo-town and some of the Beatles greatest music. A person was sitting in on recording session with Phil Spector and made note that during the work of the musicians some of the recording sounded raw and downright rough at times! Phil Spector’s response was that it didn’t always matter what happened on the floor, it was what he captured in the Recording Booth. The Moment! It’s getting those ‘moments’ and having the skill to record them that matters. That is what all musicians live for and try to capture in their recordings. Most of us never will. I believe that John Murphy has that gift and shared it in creating ‘Alberta Dust’. Unlike many studios that I have worked in where you feel so small and intimidated by the size and complexity, John and his father have created ‘Simple Productions’ to feel like you are recording in your living-room. That is exactly what I did at simple productions, as all my work was done sitting in front of a vintage amp (supplied by Simple Productions) while sitting on a big comfy couch. It was a first, and it was the most liberating experience of my recording career! A state of the Art recording facility is at the heart of Simple Productions, but unlike other studio’s it’s kept away from the recording floor so creativity isn’t confused by flashing lights and mixing boards. John’s ability to ‘coach’ and lead you where you want to go without pushing you there, made for some of the best music I’ve ever played. Again John, Thank-You. Bernie Doucette
