Since Nashville calls my songs 'poem/story songs' here's one not yet recorded so still a poem :)
Champagne and Cigarettes
I got a lotta things to do
including him, including you.
I ain't really wantin' to but not for anyone's lack of tryin'.
Includin' yours, includin' mine,
you find me selfish or unkind?
Keep in mind I'm keepin' mine from flyin'.
Could it be all the regrets
all the champagne and cigarettes
haven't gotten rid of yet?
Guess some things you can't forget.
Or I ain't figured how to yet.
Over there, the High King's son
who should be rulin' everyone
is the only one without a gun
pointin' bullets at me flyin'.
Next to him a man you'll recognize
not by his eyes but by his lines
stands beside his brother, keeping time
for more rulers dead, living dying.
Over there with a smiling face,
a lawyer seen on Nancy Grace
sets the scene, provides the place
where I sit wonder whyin'.
'Cause I really just don't see
what all this has to do with me.
I find a cage soon as I'm free.
Hell no, I ain't lyin'.
Could it be all the etc.
Should I ask the purgatorial host
of everybody else's ghost?
They say boo! I say hello.
Then I say get to flyin'.
Over there is a carnival man
with a harem and a sinister plan.
He's rattlin' the lid of the garbage can
all his money can't get him buyin'.
I tried to end this whole thing faster.
Might go on till the Rapture.
'Cause this disaster that man's after
feels rather crucifyin'.
Could it be all the regrets
all the champagne and cigarettes
haven't gotten rid of yet?
Guess some things you can't forget.
Or I ain't figured how to yet.
No I ain't figured how to yet.
No I ain't figured how to yet.
