5 Songs In Two Hours Planet Lovetron Style

Just wrapped up rehearsal with the PLANET LOVETRON Rhythm section and it was fantastic. In the space of two hours we polished five songs: "BANDA AMERICANA", "F sharp FUNK","ME LLAMAN LOUIE", "WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS CITY ANY MORE" and "THE TERROR". I have gone from being El Extreme to 'SIR COUGH A LOT' (or C.O.F.I. for short) The rest of the fellows are RANDO the Magnifizent, (percussion) Hellbilly (Trap Drums) and Automatic MAddoX. Who launched "Salsa" as a term to describe the music? The classic hit title track of Salsa y Control, composed by Jose Lebron, was one of the factors contributing to the use of the word salsa (sauce) as a descriptive term for Latin music in 1970. However, Eddie Palmieri utilized it in the song "Ritmo Caliente" which was peformed on Palmieri's debut with La Perfecta on Alegre Records in 1962 and Jimmy Sabater Sr. used it in the the song “Salsa y Bembé” which appeared on fellow Puerto Rican, Joe Cuba’s (Gilberto Miguel Calderon) album,“Stepping Out” in 1962. In 1963 Alegre Records released Charlie Palmieri’s charanga LP Salsa Na Ma. In the Henny Alvarez tune Salsa Na Ma, the chorus of Victor Velasquez and Willie Torres suggest that when they dance with their partners it is Salsa na ma…Que cosa rica (a joy).” According to Fania/Cotique record archivists. The Lebron's use of the expression "salsa y control" designated the swinging, yet restrained style the the brothers made their speciality. Since the resurgence of salsa dura (hard salsa) in the 1990’s, Salsa y Control has been covered by a number of bands. The most notable is the 1999 version by Frankie Vázquez and Martín Arroyo on the debut album by Los Soneros Del Barrio. Vázquez performed with the Lebrón Brothers for over three years and sang co-lead vocals on their 1998 album Lo Místico on Cotique.

I entered the Salsa field in 1977 as a reporter for Latin NY Magazine under the auspices of MR SALSA IZZY SANABRIA. It was like a kid being let loose in a candy store. Izzy gave me a tape recorder, camera and a notebook. Between 1977 and 1982 I wrote dozens of reviews and interviews with musicians and artists in the industry. And I kept those interviews in a chest for years as mementos. I never expected to use them again but now with the advances in technology and the radio show on WBGU FMM 88.1 Bowling Green I have been able to digitize excerpts from those interviews for use on the show.
