My dad listened to all kinds of Latin Music. As long as it had a solid Clave and Tight lyrics it was in his collection. And mixed in today's recordings was Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe and Ruben Blades. I do believe it was the stories weaved into the sings I found were the key to his fascination with them. It is the end of one of the happiest days of my life. I spent two hours with poppie via his music collection. Spoke with Izzy and our plans are solid through 2014. You'll get a taste of those plans on Wednesdays Espiritu Salsa Show. Then came the icing on the delicious cake. I went to the Music Library to see what remained of the records I donated in 1984 (13,000 +) I held in my hands for the first time in 28 years the most prized possessions from that collection. A 78 recording of Tanga made in 1943 by Machito and His Afro Cubans on Clef Records. The song was too long for a 78 and they split it in Parts 1 and 2. Found it rummaging through records being thrown out by WAMH FM in MA at Amherst College in 1976. I will play it on Wednesdays show. Then the sapphire next to the diamond. A live recording of Machito made in 1943 that the late Ernie Ensley hipped me too. I bought it at Tony's Record Shop on Boston Road (a favorite hangout of Latin NY writers to find rare LP's. The live recording is MONSTROUS and shows off the Afro Cubans at what many consider their height of creativity. It was recorded during the the height of the 1942–44 musicians' strike. What day. What a blessing. Thank you Poppie I know you made it all happen from above. http://www.facebook.com/EspirituSalsa
In 1941, the innovative musical genius Mario Bauzá Ioined the venture and returned the group's blueprint to the drawing board. Mario designed an improved model of the Machito Band. More accomplished musicians were brought in. Many of them had a jazz background. Among them were saxophonists Freddie Skerritt, Gene Johnson, and José "Pin" Madera; trumpeter Bobby Woodlen and drummer Tito Puente. John Bartee, Edgar Sampson and other arrangers with big band experience wrote many of the band's charts. The group was now developing more power of execution. Broadway impresarios discovered the orchestra in the uptown ballrooms and made it possible for them to exhibit their talent in such famous nightclubs as La Conga. Before moving on to delineating the advanced models of the band, we should give proper recognition to the early members of the orchestra. Iznaga's Siboney Orchestra. When that band broke up due to some personnei clashes, Ayala joined the newly formed Machito Band. He remained with that group until 1943, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. In 1946, he became the pianist and arranger for the Marcelino Guerra Orchestra. The collaboration of Ayala and Guerra kept that group as one of the top Latín bands in New York during the '40s and '50s.
Escoiles, alias "El Cojito" (The Lame One), was a bongó player who later switched to timbal. He played with several local groups in New York City's El Barrio (East Harlem). The Cuban-born Escoiles joined the Machito Orchestra in 1940. Tito Puente replaced him in 1941.

(In Honor Of Federico Chaluisan y Morales): My mother (Ana Chaluisan) and father not only ensured that we got a proper education but celebrated Puerto Rican culture on a daily basis in our household. I got from my mom a love to dance and a deep appreciation of all kinds of Latino music from my father who collected music from a variety of sources (principally from the radio with a cassette recorder.) When he passed away he left hundreds of cassettes in his room and I have wanted to find a way to extract those recordings for the longest time. Now with my position at WBGU FM and the technology the Station has taught me I can now fulfill my dream of utilizing his collection of music and present it to the world. I am spending the day digitizing his collection for use on the Espiritu Salsa Show and let me tell you - THE MAN HAD TASTE! Love you Poppie and Mommie. Just completed scanning all my articles published in Latin NY Magazine between 1977-1982 and Downloading Playlists from the Espiritu Salsa Programs I have hosted on radio since 1975 in various markets throughout the United States. Combined with the 400 pages of notes kept during the last two years of managing Salsa Magazine and the salsamagazine.com Salsa Awards I am embarking on (a) writing a book about the experience and (c) creating programming for the show on WBGU 88.1 FM Bowling Green to better position it to be syndicated across the United States. My ultimate goal is to submit this wealth of research towards a doctoral degree in American Studies about Global Latino pop culture from 1900 to the present.
