POP CULTURE: LATINO BURLESQUE 1940's-50's: MISS ZORITA

SALSAMAGAZINE.COM POP CULTURE: LATINO BURLESQUE 1940's-50's: MISS ZORITA http://blip.tv/wepawebtv/latino-burlesque-miss-zorita-6358153 Miss Zorita began performing at stag parties at the age of fifteen and eventually became a famous burlesque queen. Her routines often included the use of snakes, an d her most remembered was called “the consummation of the wedding of the snake" plu other avant-garde routines (including a half-man/half-woman number) as well as her preference for female companionship. She can be seen in HBO’s 2005 documentary, Pretty Things. One of the most unique burlesque queens, she was perhaps the first queen to perfect the practice of (in her words) "flashing your knish." She recalled, "There was a red light in the orchestra pit and when the red light was on, it meant the cops were in, so play it safe. When the red light went out, all bets were off. There were times you would work in the theater and you might do two shows and be covered, and the third show the red light was off and so then you flashed. And your customers were so used to that, and they knew that if they saw that you didn't flash, the law was in. And so, they just usually sat over for the second shift or came in later on that week. Some of the customers came in and saw the show two and three times." Zorita's anecdote marks a major difference between the flashing style of the classic burlesque queens and that of the current paparazzi favorites. The queens performed live onstage and no cameras were allowed into the theater. Only if you were lucky enough to be in attendance, you might be privy to a peek.

LATINO HIP HOP/FREESTYLE SPECIAL ON ESPIRITU SALSA

THIS WEDNESDAY WBGU FM 88.1 Noon-2:00 PM (Preview: http://blip.tv/wepawebtv/latino-hip-hop-freestyle-special-on-espiritu-salsa-preview-6357278) According to B.Boy Omega, a writer for The S ource, the first Latino in hip hop music was DJ Disco Wiz, a product of a Puerto Rican father and a Cuban mother who was born in The Bronx. DJ Disco Wiz, along with Casanova Fly (Grandmaster Caz), formed the pioneering Mighty Force Crew from 183rd Street and Valentine Avenue in the mid-1970s. Later on they both were joined by the first Latino MC,to rap in English Prince Whipper Whip, a Puerto Rican. Whip, unlike Wiz was exclusively an MC; Wiz was a DJ too. Casanova Fly (Grandmaster Caz) would rap and DJ at the same time. Since hip hop was experienced primarily via audio and not by video, most people never knew that DJ Disco Wiz was Puerto Rican and Cuban until they saw him. As explained by Kevie Kev in the book Yes Yes Yall, Prince Whipper Whip felt it necessary to keep his Afro-Puerto Rican background a secret in order to gain more positive acceptance. The audience perception of Whip as a Black-American made Rubie Dee the first public Puerto Rican MC according to the book. After DJ Disco Wiz, the second Puerto Rican DJ was an ex-salsa bassist turned DJ named Charlie Chase, who became the DJ along with DJ Tony Tone for the Cold Crush Brothers. Another early rap group with all Latino members was La Familia, formed in 1980.La Familia member Roski began rapping live entirely in Spanish in 1981. In 1981 a group called The Mean Machine released a 12" single on Sugar Hill Records called "Disco Dream" which was the first rap record to emphasize Spanglish. In the same year The Sugar Hill Gang featured a solo by Tito Puente on "The Sugar Hill Groove". DJ and producer Tony Touch also mentions (in an interview on blackmagazine.it) the track "Spanglish" by Spanish Fly & The Terrible 2, came out in the same year on Enjoy Records but was not as well known. In the early to mid-1980s quite a few Latin-Caribbean rappers and DJ's hit the scene. Producer and DJ Master OC and The Devastating Tito were both a part of The Fearless Four. The Master OC was also the producer of another crew named The Fantasy 3 which featured another Puerto Rican MC named Charlie Rock. Both of these crews were from Harlem. Out of the East New York section of Brooklyn came Prince Markie Dee of The Fat Boys, who later went on to produce Mary J. Blige; and Wise, the beat box from Stetsasonic. Both were Puerto Rican; as was Super Lover Cee from the Astoria Projects in Queens. Like Whipper Whip; Markie, Wise and Super Lover Cee's ethnic heritage was not that well known. Other lesser known MCs and DJs included Johnny Rock, DJ Candido, DJ Muscle and DJ Shiz(today known as B.Boy Omega) who were all Puerto Ricans from The Bronx, while Mr. L of the TDR crew was half Puerto Rican and half Dominican. DJ Dr. Dust along with his DJ partner and cousin DJ Duran from the Bronx are considered to be the first Dominican DJs in Hip-Hop (documented in The BX Factor magazine in 1996). Of Brazilian heritage, Breez Evahflowin from the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan, and is most famous as a member of the Stronghold Crew is the first MC in hip hop with parents from Brazil.

Latino Arts Industry Payola

To Paraphrase Mark Twain "The reports of our salsamagazine.com's death have been greatly exaggerated." This ride for the last two years through the Latin Music World with the Awards has been an interesting one to say the least. With the help of the global audience attraction to Mr Salsa's (Izzy Sanabria's) legacy in marketing the term SALSA through all of his creative efforts and surrounded by the team of Nuyoricans managed by Mr Salsa/WEPAwebTV's Executive Director Maria Hernandez, we are in the final phase of delivering the results and acclamation for the global dissemination of what we consider to be an American art form as represented by Salsa, Latin Jazz, Latin Rock, Latin Hip Hop, Nuyorican Poetry/Theater and Performance Art (WITHOUT TAKING ONE PENNY FROM ANYONE-THE FUNDS CAME FROM OUR POCKETS AND SALES OF OUR OWN BOOKS AND MATERIAL) . That's right AN AMERICAN ART FORM CACHE sprung from the seed of Puerto Ricans in the US during the 70's and now imitated by a host of artists throughout the world. Now there are miserable types out there who are afflicted with jealousy, mental health instability, alcoholism, drug addiction, sexual deviancy and failures as students and professionals who have nothing better to do than deride Mr Salsa and our team but when it comes down to it: WHAT HAVE THEY REALLY DONE FOR OUR CULTURE other than exploit it's existence in a vainglorious attempt to be heralded as Newgen experts while picking the pockets of artists they saddle up alongside of as DJ's, unlicensed promoters and culture pimps. All I can say is that when they can willingly lay their life on the line as a host of our generation's members did to achieve civil rights, representation and justified wages then you can talk about our demise. And I encourage the miscreants who continue to jot black notes on their little blogs to reveal themselves for what they are: Criminals exploiting Latino Artists in a variety of devious ways because coming up after the Awards presentations o September 26/27th we will be releasing a series of stories detailing how various extortion schemes are being perpetrated (while cooperating with Federal and local officials to shine a spotlight on the underbelly of the industry.)
