Every once in a while you find a CD that sounds great everywhere you listen to it. But it’s always a test to see if it sounds great in the car while you’re driving. No matter where you’re going the music is instrumental for your ride, providing a great soundtrack to the trip. And Blisstique’s new CD Stereo Spirits is pure drivin’ music.
Blisstique is the brainchild of Peter Klein and Chris Catalina, two guys that busy themselves with dropping colorful and imaginative beats and samples, electronics, guitars and more, along with musicians Andrew Lenaghan on drums and Paul Gaita on bass as well as Gus Vigo on the organ. Cyndi and Rosena Murray supply those smooth background vox.
The CD, Stereo Spirits, is a self-produced diamond that pushes the envelope with experimental and pop sensibilities, exciting musical composition and strong vocals. The influences are well-documented with focused vibes from Cake to U2 and even Pink Floyd.
Highlights on the disc are “Tuned Out,” a dark and lush electrical rocker with a Steppenwolf-like intro that rolls into a super funked verse with staccato sharp vox and lead guitars courtesy of Peter Klein. The ’70s synth sounds of “Too Soon” rolls across the CD player easily, with its Dave Matthews vibe; it should do well with radio. There are 11 songs on this disc and all of them are infectious. I do a lot of socializing on social media. Twitter being one of my favorites. I get the chance to talk to a lot of independent musicians (okay, I get the chance to flirt with a lot of independent musicians) and check out their stuff. One in particular that I think will also appeal to College Radio and underground music listeners is New Jersey’s Blisstique.
Blisstique is an exciting music project pioneered by Peter Klein. His cool sexy east coast style is prominent in his latest CD, Stereo Spirits. His busy urban background is projected perfectly in his music, making him an authentic artist. He creates music from life experience, giving us a peek into his own outlooks on life.
Moveitmista could bring road rage to mind or the image of someone who rushes through life and goes nowhere. Reminding us to focus on our goals, to think about where we want to be and that we need to plan how to get there instead of cutting people off only to find we’re in the wrong lane. A Winter’s Rage conjures a picture of hunched shoulders behind thick coats, people drawing into themselves, an island in themselves on a busy street. Seeking warmth but so concerned with self preservation and escaping the freeze that they are unable to see what may exist around them.
I hear the frustration of trying to understand the mystique of love relationships in the songs of Too Soon, Alright and This Tricky Thing….and who of us has figured that one out yet? Okay, maybe’s there is a few – they should write a book for the rest of us. In the meantime we can relate to these songs on our most personal level.
Peter Klein is an original artist with great talent and foresight for the sound he wants to create. So far Blisstique has only been a studio project. So I’m going to call out to musicians in the Jersey/New York areas who are looking to play in front of an audience.
