Local Band Mascot Decries the Passage of US Economic Stimulus Plan

San Francisco, Calif. — November 3, 2008 —San Francisco alternative-industrial rock band Marrow today issued a public statement through their puppet mascot, taking a hard line stance against the actions by the US government to bail out failing financial institutions.

"Everyday people know that misery is stasis and trying to breathe some irrational exuberance back into the market is just a bread-and-circuses attempt to fight against the emotional entropy that's natural to human beings and financial markets," says the band, speaking through its furry mascot, a black hand puppet named Glummy.

This isn't the first public policy debate the polyester-and-plastic pundit has dipped a toe into the political fray. In recent months, Glummy has taken flack for his stance on the Olympics, the US Presidential Campaign and California's Proposition 8. "[Those behind Proposition 8] think marriage should be 'kept sacred' for a man and a woman. What about puppet rights? And don't they know that nothing is truly sacred?" said Glummy of the hotly contested ballot measure.

The band's website, www.blissisignorance.com, offers the Glummy podcast as well as tour dates and exclusive tracks from Marrow's recent album, "Quiet Desperation."

Road Rage

So, here we are, our last night in Manchester, NH. It's been a whirlwind - only a week ago we were in Baltimore just prepping for our first night and now the tour is almost over. Four more shows - one in Kingston at the Basement tomorrow night, two in New Paltz on Saturday (one at 8pm and one at 11pm) and then Philly on Sunday for our last East Coast show.

The east coast has REP RE SEN TED. Erin's even got her NY accent back. None of us can understand what she's saying half the time. "What's the street we're looking for? Puhchiss? Speak english - it's Purchase!"

We've run into the sweetest people and the craziest people along the line. Dr. Nitro of the Fireworks store in Manchester NH probably took the cake so far. But luckily no one's been crazy like "let's get the FUCK OUTTA HERE!" it's more crazy - "jeez, we gotta get this guy on tape!". And everyone else has been just warm & helpful and we can't say enough good things about, and yes - you will be named here:

Baltimore - Corey, Becca and Carly NY - the Yellow Chair himself (oh, and of course, all of erin's family and friends that filled the seats...) Worcester - you know it Leighann, Bob & Douggie Manchester - Milly's - Manus Obscura, Heather & Mitch at Milly's, Pam & Heather and their entourage! We are Now Awake for being good in a really bad way. You know, like, they're good, just don't tell 'em to their faces...Nubbz - for taking charge & helping out! Ground Zero in Suncook, NH - well...good place to play, fun gig. We'll go further into that one in a future blog...

and of course, where would we be without all of the econolodges along the way to help enhance our band experience. Well, we'd be sleeping in a minivan and punching the first person to start snoring.

Love to you all and thank you to those of you who are supporting us and helping make our live shows the fun that they've been. Photos will definitely follow once we get home and can sort it all out.

MARROW- QUIET DESPERATION

Monday, September 15 2008 @ 12:00 AM PDT Contributed by: Bryan Babylon

Artist: Marrow

Title: Quiet Desperation

Label: Marrowcell

Genre: Industrial / Alternative

Track Listing: 01 High Horse 02 You Brought It Upon Yourself 03 Hack 04 Forgiveness 05 Morning 06 Closer 07 Stop 08 Knock On Wood 09 Too Late 10 Use Me 11 Out On A Limb 12 Soldier 13 There Is No Reason 14 Eerie 15 Sad Young Men

I went to a punk show last night. While listening to the bands, I was thinking about what I was going to write for this review, and I was struck by how upbeat and happy these local punk bands seemed compared to the cold emotion of Marrow's "Quiet Desperation". "Quiet Desperation" has been called "The feel bad album of the year". I would not go so far as to say that as I come across a lot of unhappy and gloomy music, but I will say this is a very raw and dark album. This album explores the nether regions of the heart. All those dark places we keep hidden from everybody else and only confront ourselves when we are feeling rotten.

Marrow, a husband and wife team (even though they do not like to talk about that), have made an album of intense bedroom poetry. The kind of words people write to themselves in diaries and journals when they are sad. The songs seem incredibly personal, and I do not think they are contrived to seem that way. My favorite song on "Quite Desperation" is track number two "You Brought It Upon Yourself", it has the lines: "Prostitute myself, Only for free, I prefer to work when its not for me, Taking the blame, To help another, Love only satisfies, When it smothers, Im guilty, Guilty"

This song really struck me, it is about those times when you fuck everything up and you know it is all your fault, and you do not want to admit it to yourself even though you know it is true. It is a song about blame, a rather intense subject no matter how you examine it.

One thing I have to criticize about "Quiet Desperation" is not a very big problem, but it bothers me nonetheless. The rhyme schemes of the lyrics do not match up with music in very many places. This contributes to the forlorn feeling of the album, but it unnerves me. I also have to say the cover of this album is a brilliantly empty and lonely photo taken in the sixties or the seventies of a blurry snow scene.

Red Devil and Beyond

We're off to a rehearsal for our Santa Monica and Long Beach shows, but before we get out of here, I wanted to thank everyone for showing up at The Red Devil Lounge on Thursday night. It's the best we've sounded to date. And we got great feedback not only from the crowd, but from the other bands we played with. Special thanks to Ruby Ruin and Tommy Dark of The Saints of Ruin and Janaya and Guillermo of Lurid Bliss. Video footage of our performance to come.

And for those of you who spaced on our show or were busy watching "the balance beam event" you can catch us at The Stork Club on 9/12 at the Death Rock Dive Bar.

Marrow in the Contra Costa Times

Marrow was named by Tony Hicks of the Contra Costa Times as the "Band of the Week".

BAND OF THE WEEK

NAME: Marrow

GENRE: alternative/electronica

HOME TOWN: San Francisco

UPCOMING GIGS: Headlining 2008 SF Sirens Gothfest, 8 p.m. Aug. 21, Red Devil Lounge, with Lurid Bliss, Saints of Ruin, Castles in Spain and Figment.

THE DEAL: Marrow is a band with a lot of experience, already headlining electronica shows. There are plenty of edgy '80s and '90s influences (Depeche Mode, the Cure, Nine Inch Nails) and singer Erin Fortes gets that you can have three keyboards on stage, as long as you have good melodies and strong vocals.

ONLINE: To listen to Marrow, or catch up on other Bay Area bands, go to BandsOfTheBay.com.

(see full article here: http://www.contracostatimes.com/tonyhicks/ci_10198681?nclick_check=1).

Today, Contra Costa Times, tomorrow, GLOBAL DOMINATION.

Marrow. Bringing sadness to the world one teardrop at a time.
